Once I have parted with my hard-earned cash, the media (i.e the paper and ink) is mine to use in whatever way I see fit. ”

Until I hear a valid argument against this, I will never submit to DRM. Thankfully, this means I will never have to. There is no valid argument against that.

Established media has fought every technological development that have ever threatened them in any way. The Catholic Church, the “established media” of historical times, fought tooth and nail to suppress Gutenburg’s printing press, lest the peons gain the ability to read and educate themselves. The printing press won. The recording industry decried the phonograph, aka record player, as an device that would destroy music as we know it by allowing people to listen to music at home. The record survived. Sony tried to kill Betamax, and we still have tapes.

All these things threatened those in power by making distribution of media easier. These technologies carried on anyway, much to the benefit of society.

Why should digital music be any different?

How do you (legally) lend an e-book is a funny and good question :-)

who are they to stop me from copy-pasting what I like. I like an e-book and if i’d like to share it with you, who’re these corportes to stop me sharing or for that matter making a copy of it?

Actually, the interview on DefectiveByDesign inspired me.

Read “The Cathedral and the Bazaar” by ESR. Cathedral – prop software developed in secrecy, in the hiding. Open Source is Bazaar- out of in the open – Your choice.
