I agree with Rinliana. By terming them as “accredited journalist”, it sounds as if the journalists were given an official approval by the Govt to “practice their trade”, which in a way, sounds a bit of an oxymoron, and contrary to the absolute meaning of being a journalist taking into account the whole freedom of speech and Govt-watch thingie.

Perhaps… just a perhaps… maybe it is just a minor solecism and that they actually meant to say “higly credible journalists” or “journalists with admirable credits” instead of “accredited journalists” … just my opinion

Do you remember the American ’embedded journalists’ in Iraq War? They were embedded with the US troops and in such a situation it was virtually impossible to report the news as it was but only as the US military wanted it. They were fed and protected by the government so was the absence of independent reports on the military action.

The Mizoram government came up with its own term to include journalists in its payroll (may not be a monthly pay, but other benefits including access to some special info., travels, etc). I don’t remember national papers like The Times of India demanding accredition of its journalists from the Central government.

I think what Mizoram needs now is not so much accredited journos as qualified, full-fledged ones. Don’t they have their own version of the Hippocratic Rule or sth?
