If you cannot recognise what you are missing, then there is no point discussing for the sake of an argument. I am not the type who boast of my charity work, but I do enough to have a good conscience. For your information, I did not take photos of the 'meihawlrawh kids' because I could not bring myself to do it. Kids should be laughing and playing, not have 20 kilos of loads on their heads when you picture them! You do not even know the reason why I am travelling and photographing, so there is no need to make your conclusion about my intentions. There is no point having sleepless nights and then saying that there is not much you can do. There is a lot you can do, and you are already doing that. Perhaps you should start a new project, and start fundraising within the misual community to sponsor more kids like you are doing. I will gladly send you donation to sponsor 5 more kids. If you need help to start a project, do let me know. I have vast experience in funraising and I am also a certified project manager. I donot really understand! what do we miss...by discussing US and China's economy? You should rather share with us what you have done for your home state in the last three years... I do not think that visiting and meeting those 'meihawlrawh kids' will give them a better life. It is a nice thing to do though! talk to them, taking nice pictures of them..etc .. :-D I actually have been paying uniforms, fees and books in English medium school for six poor kids in Mizoram for the last four years! I am planning to increase the number of kids when I get a better job! I too have had many sleepless nights because of the poverty in Mizoram, because of corruption, because of our ignorance...etc but there is not much Keimimawlte could do! hrethiams? WELL…skimi! In a real life issue, China though growing rapidly might become a superpower too but I too don't think they will REPLACE US. If both the countries maintain their current growth rate, then China will overtake US only in 8 years but that is very unlikely and would be naive to think so. First off, If Obama becomes the President, the economy will probably go up. The war takes $10 billion a month from US and I think that is why US had to continually borrow from China, for that matter itself, if Obama stop the war then that would be a positive growth for US and China will lose out their primary investment. Its safe to say that this will have effect on China's growth. That is just a single point to back up the statement of the countries maintaining their current growth rate. But one thing that could balance this out is that, China is also repping up their military budget by double-digit percentage every year now, just last year by a whooping 17%. If Obama becomes the president, he mostly will focus on domestics issue like the economy, healthcare, energy independence, education and it almost seems like he will maintain (the budget from Clinton's era) the military budget but not really add to it. So if we think about it this way, China has a slight edge to close their gap. However, the gap is too huge to see any close race between the two. ( $45 Billion to almost $800 Billion, present value). However, China and Russia are still the biggest threat to US, One vital wrong move by US then we can see new Superpower heads faster then we expect. NB: In 30 years ( since 1978 ) china's GDP increased 4-fold! So like Elcee said, " No one knows what could happen " !! elcee, very nice deduction. If China's fantastic economic growth the last thirty years will continue another twenty years, the country may attain great power status. Even though the USA wills still have a higher GDP in real terms, China has a much bigger population (1.3 billion people vs. 0.3 billion people now). As we all agree, superpower status is not only about economic strength. Japan is a good example of the contrary. In 1990 Japan was almost overtaking the USA economically. It was by far the world's biggest export nation and invested heavily it assets all over the world. However, from a diplomatic and military point of view, the country was still a midget. China is different. It has had a seat as one out of five permanent veto powers in the United Nation Security Council since its foundation. They spend a lot more on their military than the reported figures. During the last years China has developed strong ties with countries in Africa, and to a lesser extent South America. Their main focus is to secure the supply of commodities, but political allies and bigger export markets are also part of their strategy. In Asia, China is keeping a check on their two only serious rivals India and Japan, by keeping close political connections with Pakistan, Myanmar and North Korea. China is also cooperating with Russia to form a counterweight to the USA-led Western powers. Financially China has increased its power by being the main buyer of American public debt, and also running a huge trade surplus with the USA. On the other hand China is lacking a lot if they want to achieve superpower status in our generation. The economic growth so far has been based on a combination of abundantly cheap labor, and copying of other products. The wage level in China's east coast provinces has grown a lot, and countries like Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Hindustan now offer lower wages. China still has a very long way to go when it come to research and development, marketing, design and branding. These are necessary skills if the country is to keep the economic growth rate at a high level in the years to come. USA will still have several 'soft power' advantages. The dollar is the world's reserve currency. The best universities are American, and this combined with interesting jobs and good opportunities to start up companies draw the most ambitious and intelligent people from all over the world to the USA. The USA totally dominates the popular culture. The world language is English and will remain so for a very long time. Even though the Roman empire fell some time before the year 500, its language Latin was still the most important international language in Europe for the next 1200 years! The demographics will also pose a threat to China in the long run. Due to the strictly enforced one child policy, the population will be ageing. More money will have to be spent on pensions and health care for the old. On the contrary, the USA has one of the highest fertility rates in the rich world and enjoys as previously mentioned a huge immigration of highly skilled people. So, my conclusion is that China will grow relatively in power compared to the USA in the years to come. The role as the world's sole superpower that the USA has enjoyed since the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 and the break-up of the Soviet Union into 15 independent countries in 1990, until now is diminishing year by year. However, there will be no sole country to overtake the USA the world's next superpower. Instead global politics will be dominated by several great powers like the USA, EU, Brazil, Russia, Japan, India and China. So..there are few chances for China to get the role "the world's superpower" but is China going to be superpower within 50 years? no one knows.. aryan doesn't know. spikey doesn't know, ...even the ever brightest economist in the world doesn't know.. may be God knows :-D seems like Spikey and aryan decided to stop their discussion in this post.. may be it is time to make a conclusion with my humble opinion (not Aryan’s humble opinon :-D ) I decided that aryan and spikey are the most intelligent and brightest commentors at misual.com.. anyway you guys did a good job :-D I think we all learned alot from your discussion.
