Cannabis indica (or sativa) is also known as Indian hemp, hashish or marijuana. The female plant is taller, about 4-6 m, and has more darker and luxuriant foliage than the male. The active principle are contained in its resins. The principal constituent of the resin are cannibinol, which has no action, cannabidiol which is also inert, but on exposure to heat it is partly converted to the very active isomeric tetrahydrocannabinols (THC). All parts of the plant, male or female, contains the active material. It is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant. It is variously known as pot, grass, weed, hash, MJ or bhang. It is used in the following forms -

1. Bhang : It is prepared from the dried leaves and fruit shoots. It is the mildest and contains 15%of the active principle. Fresh bhang is highly intoxicating and narcotic. Bhang kept in storage for two to three years is midly stimulating and pleasure giving.

2. Majoon : It is a sweet prepared with bhang. It increases appetite and sexual desire.

3. Ganja : It is prepared from the flower tops of the female plant. It has a rusty green colour and a characteristic odour. It is mixed and smoked with tobacco in a pipe or hukka. It contains 15 – 25 % of the active principle.

4. Charas or hashish : It is the resin exuding from the leaves and stems of the plant, and contains 25-40% of the active principle. It is dark green or brown in colour. It is mixed and smoked with tobacco. The smoked is inhaled deeply into the lungs and retained for as long as possible for potent effects.
