Post Uttarayan kite flying proved to be fatal for two two-wheeler riders as the glass-laced manja cut through their throats. The remaining two fatalities were caused when kite flying enthusiasts fell off terraces. This takes the total death toll in Uttarayan to eight in the city alone. On Saturday, five Uttarayan deaths were reported from other parts of the state.

Of the 83 persons who reported with a variety of ‘Uttarayan injuries,’ 25 had sustained cut injuries by kite strings, 48 fell from terraces and balconies, while 10 others were hit by vehicles while chasing after kites.

Sunday kite flying turned fatal for a scooterist Ramkumar Chaudhary, 32, a resident of Delhi Darwaza. Chaudhary fell prey to the deadly cut of manja. He was rushed to a private hospital but succumbed to heavy blood loss.

A similar fate befell a resident of Odhav , Vijaya Patel, 45, on Saturday afternoon. Near Madhavnagar in odhav, the woman’s neck got entangled in a manja thread. She was rushed to a private hospital in Odhav, where she succumbed to excessive blood loss and injury later in the evening. Parmeshwar Sharma, 45, a resident of Shaherkotda, fell off a roof on Friday. He died on Saturday afternoon. A youngster fell off a roof on Saturday while flying kite. The incident took place at AG quarters in Meghaninagar. Kamlesh Parmar, 18, fell from the terrace of a three-storey building.

He sustained several injuries on his head and body. He was rushed to Civil Hospital where the medicos declared him dead.

AHMEDABAD: As extended Uttarayan festivities came to a close, Dariapur erupted with communal violence late on Sunday evening. The incident was sparked at 8.30 pm. Heavy stone pelting took place between members of two communities that stay close by in Dariapur. Five persons were injured in the stone pelting and were rushed to the civil hospital.

As police teams reached the spot to bring the situation under control, crude bombs and burning rags started flying around, some being aimed at the cops as well. Police fired several teargas shells to disperse the rioting mobs. However, the violence continued till late into the night.

Police officials said that the trouble started over kite flying. While some boys were flying a ‘tukkal’ in the evening, some others had mischievously cut the lanternbearing kite with manja. This sparked off an altercation between two groups of youngsters. Stone pelting first began in Bawa Nu Dehlu opposite JP High School and rapidly spread to other parts of congested Dariapur.

For two days, additional teams of the city police had been placed at the super-sensitive communal hotspot. However on Sunday, there was no security cover as Uttarayan and Vasi Uttarayan festivities were over.
