29th Dec 06: Don’t drink before travelling

On 30th Dec 2006, I left work early to prepare for my trip home. I started from home by 10:30 towards Xorrin’s house which is close to the Airport. That makes sense because my flight leaves 5 AM on 30th Dec morning. With a friend from misual.com, had good time drinking beer in the moon-lit rooftop. There I got the worse ever effect of beer on empty stomach. Nothing ever happened to me just for a bottle of beer or two. But that night, I lost my senses. Around 1, I returned home to pick something important I had forgotten and don’t remember how it actually went. I also can’t recall putting my luggage thru the xray machine. Xorrin threatened they might even reject me in that condition. I remember puking in the airport restroom. I don’t remember the plain taking off. In short it was a disaster. Looking back, I am shit scared. I am so glad I arrived safely in Kolkata . Bad experience and good lesson learned. Don’t drink before travelling. Don’t drink beer on empty stomach. I believe my sincere prayer before leaving the house the first time saved me.

31st Dec in Kolkata. Mama can dance.

Arrived early morning on 30th Dec, checked into Mizoram house at Salt Lake. I attended a service at Kolkata’s Adventist’s Church with friends and hanged out at Kolkata’s City Centre in the evening, a modern shopping mall with Inox multiplex. Instead of one giant building like Chennai’s Spencer, Kolkata’s City Centre has several not so large buildings, seven of them I think, interconnected , has several wide entrances , exits, open air stage, rooftop food court. If you are staying at Salt Lake, you should go to City Centre. 25 bucks by rickshaw will get you there.

Come 31st, my flight got cancelled and it was clear that I had to spend 31st night in Kolkata. I did not panic nor feel sad a bit. I am used to spending Christmas and New Year far away from home, even alone. In Kolkata, I was far far from being alone. So many Mizo’s around itself gave me good feelings. I even met Maimawm’s sweet little sister who was also stranded due to the same reason.

That night, Kolkata Mizo Student’s Union organised a party at Mizoram House which began with a short worship session. Upa Lianzela (not sure about his name), lecturer from Hrangbana College who had come to Kolkata to do M.Phil spoke, who got himself too interested and even continued into the new year :-(. Then the party stared. I was glad to have three pretty girls and soon to be doctors from NIH. In the absence of Sandman and Goldmember, I finally got to be the man :-)

The Student’s Union did a good job of organising the party. Mizoram house gates were closed/locked at 11. Since the elders and some other welfare people didn’t really like the idea of this party, the student leaders requested everyone to behave themselves. avoid disturbing guests and families. I did see people drinking in dorm but saw non drunk causing trouble.

You probably have seen Mama (Tulunga) playing but have you seen him dancing? I did. There was this guy with a cap, enjoying himself dancing with every possible style you could imagine. I was like “Who’s this?” When the lights came on, it was none other than Malsawmtluanga, who was also one of the sponsors of the party.

To wind up, it was a very very decent New Year party. Oh I almost forgot, the chicks! When you have been away from Mizoram for several years and when you happen to stay in a place like Chennai, you couldn’t avoid looking around admiring the pretty Mizo girls of Kolkata. I had a feeling God wanted me right there that night :-) I left the party at 4:30 to pack up and started from Mizoram House by 5 AM on the first day of 2007.

1st Jan 07: Road trip to home

My aunt drove down to Silchar to receive me. After breakfast at circuit house, we started our road trip home on New Year day. We didn’t find a hotel to eat zing chaw. We lived with the breakfast till we reached home.

2nd jan 07: misual.com tea party

Sandman, Eternal Sunshine (Maimawm’s sister), The Sphinx Clan, J and Alexxfender turn up. Many thanks to you all again.

3rd Jan 07: My first night out

During the day I visited Remand home, Women Polytechnic and KV Paradise. Remand home, Social Welfare Department run Juvenile Home turned out to be smaller than I thought without a few buildings inside and just two for the girls section. There were only as few as 10 inmates according to a woman staff I talked to. The road to KV Paradise is really small and there is no way another vehicle would pass. I took pictures all along. The campus of Women Polytechnic is impressive but met no women :-)

At 7 in the night, I started for my first night out alone in Aizawl. I went as far as Kulikawn to Christina’s house to have her home cake that I have addicted to since my earlier trip home. While at Christina’s house, I saw journalist Sangzuala Hmar on TV taking part in a talk show. I paid totally no attention to the talk show because there was Christina and her cake :-) Wasn’t very comfortable driving alone thru Durtlang Pass at 10 in the night. I however saw no ghost asking for lift.

4th Jan 07: My day out

I went to BSNL office to pay phone bill but the queue was too long so I gave up. Had some facial done at Shahnaz Herbal, Khatla. It’s not like I was up to impressive someone. Back in Kolkata some girl thinking I was her much hated ex scratched me on my face and I had to get rid of those marks. Ok I made that up. On the way home, I paid a visit alone :-( to Aizawl’s famous restaurant David’s Kitchen. I had friend momo and coffee.

5th Jan 07: Last day

The day began with a visit to Sir Lala @ Providence High School followed by a quick walk through Millennium Centre where I paid 5 bucks for using the toilet. It was a funny scene, a guy coming to you as you leave the rest room asking you “I E A MI?” :D. Having paid the guy 5 bucks, I left the mall for a quick walk across the market. I purchased two VCDs - Youth Icon for 150 bucks and Daduhi Music Video Collection for 100 bucks. At Zion Street, I ran into Esther Vanchhawng (Ph.D Scholar), a fellow Mizo Chennaite and Chhuangi (RIMS). We all went to Dawrpui Zote bakery, purchase the tasty Zote cakes. On the way home, I stopped by UTI bank to meet former classmate Dorothy, who in no time convinced to open an account. You can’t refuse Dorothy :-). After that, was a quick visit to Pu Makunga of Mount Carmel School. And finally a visit to Sandman’s house. Everyone was at home, except his sweetheart :-) His three sisters, mom (Pi Chhingpuii) and Senior Sandman (Pu Rema). I learned from Sandman, a former classmate Hruaii (RIMS) a relation and neighbor of Sandman was at home, so dropped into to their house briefly before taking off.

During my stay, I also met Silent_Man, Mr Pervet, former Mizo Chennaites suchs as Lawma(Plastic Coated) and Seni, Jims, former classmate from Tiny Tots School Andy Lalrinawma, now working for ICICI Bank at Aizawl.

6th Jan 07: Visit to Aizawl Zoological Garden

Though my flight was scheduled at 1420 hours, started early from home since I wanted to check out the new zoo near PTC. Good to see a forest ranger in full uniform at the entrance. This time, the entrance gate look more like a zoo and attractive too. Fewer animals but more natural and closer to natural habitat spaces for the animals in the zoo. There’s no tiger and couldn’t wake up the bear! I met a polite and friendly man at the translation centre who showed me that Vavu is the State bird of Mizoram.

At 1300 hours, I arrived at the Airport. The Airport is really a good place to meet people. Met many Mizo Chennaites and former classmates. Raymond (Loyola College) and girlfriend, Zawlnei Daniel (Loyola College), Michael (MCC) and his pretty cousin studying in Hyderabad, Teii and Mapuii of Bain School, Mami of Ethiraj college, Ph.D Scholar RC and younger bro Puitea (Loyola College), former Mizo Chennaite Ruati and Tetei, Class 10 batchmates Priscilla, Ma-awmtea (doing BDSc in Guwahati), Johny (Air Deccan), relative Pu Vala (Security, Indian) and another relative Kunga (Omega Travels)

7th Jan 07: All the way to Sonarpur

It was past six when I reached Mizoram House @ Salt Lake on 6th Jan. That every evening I took off to visit Springs of Life, a boarding for orphans at Sonarpur. After the train ride, as we move towards share auto stand, I was much tempted by hot Bengali Chai , Bengali sweets and other Bengali delicacies from the roadside vendors. We boarded share auto and it won’t move unless there’s 4 in the back and 4 in front including the driver. There’s a makeshift seat to the left and right of the driver’s seat. Slept off even before dinner was served. I was awaken around 11 for dinner and soon after dinner slept off again. In the morning, I was taken for a walk around the school’s garden where different vegetables are grown. They showed me carrots and I asked I see none. I had totally forgotten carrots are roots and expected to see carrots growing over the ground. That was major discovery for me that morning.

My flight to Chennai being at 1920 hours, I had enough time to roam around. Visited New Market (which was closed it being Sunday by the way), Metro Plaza and then City Centre again.

That’s my seven days trip. Today I am back in Chennai writing this report. I missed it.
