‘DON’ – A BIASED REVIEW
November 1st, 2006 8:24 pm | Movies and Videos | dear_diary | 300 ViewsI got an unexpected break and my friend and I wanted to do something ‘interesting’. That ruled out shopping and pubbing, because although we are no angels, the two just didn’t fall into our idea of interesting that day. We briefly thought of being artsy and watching some art exhibit. But we recalled our Picasso episode and decided not to risk it.
So we checked out the movies and NOTHING was intriguing. The English movies were all animated and also showing at weird hours like 9 or 11 pm. Which are weird hours when you’re talking about two girls with no mode of transportation except autorickshaws. ‘DON’ was the only movie showing at a reasonable timing. (It was 4 pm at that time and the show was at 5 pm, also we didn’t want to have too much time to think because we would definitely change our minds then).
Now that I have made it clear I did not watch the movie because I wanted to (I am not a fan of Hindi movies. Pardon to all readers who are, and who are probably seething because I am not one). Anyhow, my friend and I went to one of those new multiplexes and sat through 15 minutes of ads. Also the two seats next to me were empty but later occupied by two very drunk guys. (I do have a lot of luck). The drunker guy kept staring at me, I must have looked pretty darn good in the dark and in the alcoholic haze he was in. Anyhow, I was holding on to my temper but when he grabbed my coffee, I was pretty amazing to watch. Or atleast to listen to. His friend hustled him three rows front. Nobody messes with my coffee.
Well, to get back to the movie, Shah Rukh Khan was initially not acting like himself. I was filled with hope. However as the movie wore on, they dragged out his ‘double-role’ who acted exactly like Shah Rukh Khan. After that it went pretty much downhill for me. The better part of the movie was when Kareena Kapoor in her cameo role tried to seduce the Don. A song came on and she was shaking most parts of her anatomy in all her golden glory. No wonder the Don was not very seduced.
I better not give away too much of the story, incase there are any among us who plan to watch it. But it’s not a bad way to spend 3 hours. Also the movie is filled with one twist after another. In other words, it’s pretty twisted.
The good points about this movie, compared to other Hindi movies are:
The blood actually looked like blood.
The songs were slightly lesser in number.
However, if each actor had taken 15 seconds lesser to turn their heads from left to right, or to give each other very meaningful looks, the movie would have ended maybe half an hour earlier. Also they took ‘multi-starrer’ to new heights. I have no idea if Arjun Rampal was essential to the plot. Anyhow, he is definitely easier on the eyes than Shah Rukh Khan. Speaking of looks, Priyanka Chopra looked pretty good, fit and everything. If only bees had not stung her lips. Sigh.
PS: Apologies to all who found this utter tripe, out of context, unethical, unIndian etc etc. The only thing I can say in my defense is that I was bored out of my skull.

See what boredom does to you? First it makes you watch a movie you didnt want to see. Then it makes you bore everyone else by writing about it.
