Madness again?

If alarm bells are not already ringing in the corridors of the Home department, they should do because the state is again on the verge of being policed by unauthorised people in the form of volunteers of the CYMA’s SRS. Already, about 200 people have been forced from their homes in the western parts of the state capital while passengers coming by road transport to Aizawl are being detained and subjected to arbitrary checking by these volunteers.

In 2005, the state government had turned a blind eye to unlawful activities perpetrated in the name of society which resulted in a near civil war since the Mizo community split in half with one half in full support of the unlawful activities and the other half aghast at the blatant fights violations and disregard of the laws of the land. It was only after the news media came out strongly against the unlawful activities and the government’s complicity with these people that the government finally waked up to the fact that it had a situation that could earn condemnation even in international circles.

After hiatus of about a year, the CYMA, in the form of the SRS, is again embarking on a path that had nearly earned the state the term ‘barbaric’ and ‘lawless’. While the eviction of families engaged in manufacture of illicit liquor can be condoned to an extent even though the SRS has no authority at all, the stopping of vehicles and arbitrary checking of passengers’ luggage on highways is something the state government needs to put a stop to immediately before courts are approached by irate passengers.

What must be remembered is that it is not only by air that non-Mizos come into the state. Business men and government employees also come by road and if these people are subjected to such checks, which are unheard of in states that have no insurgency problems, they could well complain to authorities that have power to question the state government. Moreover, the SRS activities on highways could blacken the already damaged image of the Mizo society which has earned such terms of being inhospitable and discriminating.

YMA is becoming an organization of bullies against the weak and helpless. Why don’t they do something about corruption or nepotism? – mainly because they don’t have the guts to stand up to the powerful.

And what is the government doing about YMA’s unlawful activities – nothing, because they’re spineless.

Time we had a ruling party (or government) strong enough to disallow unlawful activities……. kan ram hi develop leh changkang ngaihna a awm lo ti hi chuan……….
