Mizo is Exclusive. Not Inclusive
February 4th, 2008 12:45 pm | whatever | dstag01 | 159 viewsThere is a general feeling that the generic term ‘Mizo’ is not inclusive enough to include all the Zohnahthlak people. But rather it is too exclusive for (and to) the Duhlian speaking group. We identify a Mizo with Duhlian language and doesn’t (probably and really) accept someone, using a different language, as a Mizo though he/she may belong to the Zohnahthlak.

I still prefer “Lusei tawng” than “Mizo tawng”. A Paite/Lai/Hmar may say ” I am Mizo but I can’t speak Lusei”. It soulds good. It’s really awkward for other Mizo tribes than Lusei to say “I am Mizo, but I can’t speak Mizo”….huiha

Me prefer to say “Mizo tawng” than any other like ‘duhlian or hmar or etc etc.’ because Mizo tawng is not only Duhlian/Lusei language it is mix with other zohnahthlak languages and it is for all Zohnahthlak.
Mizo tih chuan zohnahthlak pumpui kan huamtir tho si chuan “Mizo tawng” ka tih chuan chu chuan zohnahthlak zawng zawng (mizo) ta/ tawng a ni tih a lantir a. Its not the usage that I am concerned but the attitude. I agree with Burbura. We should be able to accept every dialect spoken by the zohnahthlak as a part of the Mizo language. Lets not try to enforce the idea that a Mizo should necessarily be identified with the Lusei dialect. We say Mizo is inclusive, but….kanidari Says:
Technically chuan Lusei tawng a ni ngat mai. Mahse Mizo tawng tih hi a sualna ka hre hauh lo mai. Hei, Lusei tawng chu Mizo tawng ani kan tih a, and if we expect every damn being who can call themselves a Mizo to speak Lusei tawng then are not we trying to be exclusive and not inclusive. I saw it first hand, in shillong. For instance, omeone said like this to a friend of min, “You are so low, you don’t even know Mizo tawng (ie Lusei tawng)”. That person may be saying it in a light vein, but I think it sums up the idea. Think of this: There are many non-Lusei speaking zohnahthlak in Mizoram, wat is our attitude towards them when they speak their own dialect. I don’t think they are welcome into the mainstream. Wat an irony! On one hand we call them a zohnahthlak and on the otherhand we don’t welcome them.
