Aizawl, Aug 13: The Society for Recovering Addicts is busily preparing themselves to organize an Addicts Day here on August 31 in commemoration of their second anniversary.
Speaking to the Aizol Times newspaper, David Zothanpuia, chairman of the society said, “From what we have learned, a special day for addicts have never been observed anywhere in the world although addiction is one of the biggest issues in the world. That is why we have decided to organize this special day and hopefully, the rest of the world will follow suit.”
David, a recovering addict, also revealed some of the plans they have made for the day saying they will release helium filled balloons at 12 noon on August 31 in memory of all those who have died due to drug overdose and other drug related problems. Then from 7:00 pm, a special programme will be held at Vanapa Hall.
“During this special programme, we will hand out awards to our fellow addicts who have kicked their addiction for more than a few years. Special awards will also be handed out to those who had devoted all their time and sweat to help the addicts take their path to recovery. A free concert will follow this programme where most of our renowned musicians will perform,” he continued.
He also went on to say that although their anniversary falls on August 20 and that they had initially planned to observe Addicts Day on that day, they had to postpone it as they are short of funds. “We still have more than one week to prepare ourselves for the special day and I believe that we can successfully organize this day to give encouragement to all our fellow addicts,” he said.
Answering questions on the aims and objectives of the society, David explained, “Our society has many aims and objectives but to sum it up our main objective is to show that addicts can contribute to the society. All our life we have brought hardships to our family, friends and society and the society has developed a mentality that we need help all the time. We are trying to change this mentality and show that we can give back and lend help.”
