Mizo names

September 18th, 2006 11:45 pm by Sandman

Other Indians have always found our names to be funny and strange. Just like how we find their names to be funny and strange too. This is a natural phenomenon that one must expect whenever there is a clash of culture.

In the midst of all these, some of my non-Mizo friends would come up to me and ask “Dude, how come he has an English name while you don’t? Is he not a pure Mizo?” or something to that effect.

Lolz. I don’t blame them for asking such a ridiculous question. After all, just when they were getting used to meeting my Mizo friends with Mizo names, they suddenly met my other Mizo friends with names like “David” and “Stephen”. So once again I had to tell them that there are many Mizos with English names too.

Which led me to wonder, when did we Mizos first started adopting English names? And how come nearly all of us don’t have those Mizo names our Ancestors used to have? Is this our way of showing we are “progressing”? The Welsh Missionaries were even given Mizo names when they first came to Mizoram. Now the tables have turned completely. My friend Mary told me she had an English name to show that she’s a Christian. I mean, do we need to advertise our religion like that? Do you want to be stereotyped the moment people read or hear your name?

I once asked my friend Jenny for the story behind her English name. She told me that she had absolutely no clue why she was named Jenny and the only thing she knew was that it stood for Jennifer. So I asked her if her parents were big fans of J-Lo and she smacked me on my head. Moving on to my other friend Lucy, I asked her that since Jenny was derived from Jennifer, was Lucy derived from Lucifer? Another whack on my head!

Anyway, sometimes I used to wonder why some of us have English names. Is it because we consider English sounding names to be more sophisticated? Could this be just another case of Colonial hangover? Another clear cut case of our strange fascination over white skinned people?

One thing I know for sure is that, all the Mizo Catholics I have met so far all have English names. Names like Stephen, Francis, Paul, Mary, Margaret and Theresa. They were all named after their Saints or somebody important in the Bible. Well I can understand that, but what about the other Mizos?

Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to spark off a debate here. I am just curious to know why some of us would want to name our children with an English sounding name. Is having a Mizo name that embarrassing? I for one would never give an English name to my children. Don’t mistake this for an ethnocentric or xenophobic remark. I just don’t see any reason why I should give a foreign sounding name to my own flesh and blood, unless ofcourse I was forced at gun-point to do so.

And if you look at this as just another Pro-Mizo article, let me tell you that atleast 90% of my closest Mizo friends have English names. My article is not directed at those Mizos having English names but rather focused at WHY we are so fascinated on giving English names to our Children.

And speaking of naming your children, here is a small advice. NEVER include the words “fak” and “dik” in your children’s name. Like, Lalfakawma or Lalrindika. Face it, we are living in a Global Village where everybody’s mixing with everybody. And if your son or daughter has the words “fak” or “dik” in their names, trust me, they are going to be the butt of all jokes from their non-Mizo friends. In Mizoram, it’s ok to be called “Faka”, but definitely not outside Mizoram!!! Especially if you are sweetly named “Mafaka”!!! That would be sheer character assassination outside Mizoram!

Coming back to this topic, many of my friends tell me that they were named after Bible characters. Names like David, Amos, Jerusha, Solomon, Benjamin, Abigail, John, Isaac, Esther, Sarah, Michael, Samuel and Emmanuel. But what about those names like Jimmy, Gnat, Tracy, Stacy, Aldrin, Andy, Jerry, Charles, Samantha, Betty, Sandra and Brad???? Pray do tell me where in the passages of The Bible did you ever come across such names?

If The Holy Bible was such a big criteria for naming our children, then please let me know if you’ve heard of any Mizos with names such as Nebuchanazzer, Goliath or Herod. Some of you might say those guys were the bad guys. Ok fine, then what about names like Corinth, Theophilus, Uriah and Casiphia. Any of you know any Mizos with those names?

And if the names need not be related to The Bible, then why not have other foreign “first names” like Nkuru, Ntini, Mutombo, Okacha, Thierry, Gilberto, Kolo, Cesc, Júlio, Abou, Gaël, Agathangelos, Carlos, Antonio, Pièdro, Francois, Louis, Blancheflour, Milosevic, Abramovich, Nemanja, Lijuan, Huang, Xiaofang, Sung, Xiang etc? Why are most of the names (other than a very few exceptions) copied only from the US and the UK? Is this because we hold the West in extremely high regards or is this some kind of a Racist attitude that we have towards the African Countries, Latino Countries, Scandinavian Countries, South-east and Far-east Asian Countries etc?

Anyway, this post is all about exploring this issue on why we sometimes name our children with English names and is definitely not targeted at those Mizos with English names.
If you have comments such as “I have the full rights to name my son with any name that I want and you got no rights to tell me how to name my son”, then please keep such comments to yourself. There are some of us who like to have an open minded discussion and move forward. Obstinate comments will only hinder our progress. Let’s discuss this “Mizos with foreign names” topic on grounds like whether it is because of globalization? Is it because of a case of identity? Is it because we want to be a part of both the “new World” and the “old World”? Is it because people will find it much easier to pronounce? Is it because of Christianity? Is it because it is considered stylish and chic? Is it because of the Snob effect? (Snob Effect = Economics term for a condition when a consumer wishes to own an exclusive or unique good).

Ps. I ain’t attacking anybody here. Don’t mistake this article as a propaganda against Mizos with non-Mizo names. LoLz!!! It’s just that I have seen many Mizos make xenophobic Pro-Mizo statements with a hint towards some kinda Mizo supremacy ideology, and most of them do not support the idea of welcoming any “outsiders” into our Community. Yet, when it comes to adopting “foreign” names (or listening to “foreign” songs, watching “foreign” movies, wearing “foreign” clothes etc. for that matter) these same people happily don’t mind all that. I find this a bit ironic. I am writing an article on racism and I really hope you guys can fill me in on this behavior inconsistency etc… and help me understand this whole issue better. Thanx.

Peace out.

Mizo people with English names – I’ve heard people blast them a gazillion times before. I used to cringe with embarrassment and go home and scream at my dad ‘Why?’
I feel differently now though…I know my name was given to me for a reason and a beautiful one at that. And it’s meaningful. And besides, I’m stuck with it whether I like it or not so might as well be cool about it. And no one can tag me as the girl with the English name cos it’s not even English. :D
Also, forgettable characters like me need something to make people help remember you. And if a unique, albeit weird, name’s going to do that, I’m glad.
It also helps one getting a job :-) Every interview I’ve ever given, I’m invariably asked where I get my name from and what it means. And that’s something I can enunciate on very well..and ta-daa, people are impressed! they offer you a job! LOL

the reason could be varied sandman….it could be the hangover from the colonial days…but more so cuz the first people mizos looked up to were the sap missionaries…and when someone looks up on someone..we tend to do things their way…and then we started having the english bibles..and the new way of pronouncing names maybe was fascinating.i think most parents from the 1970`s to 1990`s (parents who had children at this period) had a fascination for giving their kids names from the bible..and of course later generation moved on to more exotic sounding names from books as we had more excess to english books..it was a phase…and now parents from the late 1990`s have started going back to our roots and the latest in vogue is to give their kids only mizo names.i was always called lalmohan(vais ways of pronouncing lalmuanawmi i guess) a friend was always called baldeb(vais way of pronouncing valte) so i think in some contexts its easy to give ur kids easy sounding names instead of being called lalmohan all ur life lol maybe thats why my mom`s friends gave me a punjabi name and i am stuck with it!!..and hey names are an extension of yourself..so i think its a personal matter. did u read the book `The Namesake’ by jhumpa lahiri??? it sort of deals with names too..:) neway urs is an interesting article as always..

And forget ancestors, let’s talk about the generation just before mine (that would be the generation right after J’s… hihihi I couldn’t help with that! Now she’s gonna kill me.) In the preceding generation before mine, my dad have what one might say a typical Mizo name. But my mum is called Darchhingpuii, and till now I havent met any girls from my generation with that name, although in my mum’s generation I know atleast 7-10 women having such a name. One more thing I have noticed is that we Mizos have this habit of calling each other with two syllable names. Have you guys noticed that too? When calling out to each other, we always use two syllables of that person’s name (unless we are using Prefixes like Pa, Pu, Pi, Nu etc…), like Rina, Kima, Kimi, Kimkim, Tluangtluang, Tluanga, Tluangte, Sangte, Hminga, Hminglian, Hmingte, RP, KP, SP, TP etc. The only other time we use more than two syllables of the person’s name is when we want to show irritation, anger, reprimand, criticism or as a reply after being teased at by that particular person.

Even when we hurl out abuses or cuss words at each other, it’s always a two syllable word! :-) Like zawng-a, hmel-a, ek-a, vai-a, zawngchh* etc. lolz.

For me, it’s a bit funny when English names are zoified and becomes truly Ang-zo names :-) My friend Richard became Chat-a, Robert became Bart-a etc. Even though the short form for Rebecca is Becky, I think what most Mizos use is actually Beck-i.

Even English names with less than or more than two syllables are not spared. Like Christopher becomes Christo, Solomon becomes Solo, Emanuel becomes El-a, Benjamin becomes Ben-a or Ben-te and Goldmember becomes Goldie :-P. One syllable names like Paul becomes Paul-a, Mark becomes Mark-a and Gnat becomes Gnat-a. One of my classmates in school was Paul and we all called him Paul-a. But it’s really funny when the rest of our non-Mizo classmates would call him Paul-a too because they actually thought his name was “Paula” (as in Paula Abdul).

It’s funny how our culture always manages to catch up eventually in the end. Makes me proud and happy to know that no matter what we do, there will always be a part of Mizoness within us.

It’s one of the best articles I’ve ever read regarding naming of mizo guys. Here are few comments with supplements from a man who does’t want to adulterate his name with any foreign name.

No matter whether the foreign names we used to give ourselves are from the bible after the holy saints or from any where else, but one thing for I’m very sure is that, they are not the tickets for entering into heaven. So then, what’s the benefit n advantage of bearing the so called holly names.

Mizo guy who is lover of foreign name may feel that he is free enough to have it and may think who can stop him from having it.
Here is the answer from Exodus 20:15 & 17. 15 “You shall not steal. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
Why do we used to steal foreign names?. Are we authorized or permitted?. Why do we love, covet and steal foreign names that belongs to others and why do we segregate and dislike our own chhinlung names.

Don’t you know ‘Tsunami’ a Japanese word is already sworn in the book of Oxford Dictionary. Even the most remote place in the world like mizoram is also so much dominated and assimilated by the terms like Tsunami, Kawasaki, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Hitachi, Sumo, Taikwandu, Karate, Judo, Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, Toyata, Hurricane Katrina, etc etc.

Thanx for your comment Valbawng, although I don’t think it is fair to compare our culture to the Japanese culture. They are so much more advanced than us, and so, naturally words like tsunami, Suzuki, Sumo, Karate etc will be copied by the rest of the World. Even so many words from Hindi are copied by the rest of the World.

However, let me tell you one thing. Mizo words are not completely ignored. Many of my school mates even till now still use the word “chhass”. There were around 12 Mizos in our 11th std class and another 12 in 12th std class. Due to the interaction between Mizos and non-Mizos, the word “chhass” to describe a hot babe has now become a part of the vocabulary of the non-Mizos. The other day I met some of my School friends at CCD and as we were catching up, my friend Nikhil suddenly warned us “Chhass” and we all turned to see one voluptuous babe entering the Coffee place. I was amazed all these guys still used that word even after graduating from school 9 years ago. I nearly cried that day :-)

The topic racism is getting deeper and deeper everyday and I realized it is not as easy as I thought it would be. I’m getting a couple of research papers on the psychological profile of a racist and a victim of racism from my sister’s department in UK and it’s gonna take longer than I thought. These topics have already been there, so I’m trying to make this solely on the perspective of a “chinky in India” basis. And with me preparing for a couple of entrance exams while pushing a part-time job (could be two part-time jobs from next week!), I can spare not more than 2 hours a day on my blog so it’s definitely gonna take more time. But don’t worry, I will definitely inform you once it is completed.

No offence dear lovingangel, but I just can’t help wondering what is it with us Mizos and the way we always bring in other unrelated topic during the course of a discussion?

I still remember the other day me and a couple of other members were arguing with an anonymous dude about the Mizo police being sent to Bihar. We said it was a part of their duty to undertake any mission from their superior and this doesn’t mean we are not concerned about their safety. Suddenly this guy said that if I was so concerned about the safety of the Mizos, why don’t I campaign for the Zomis and Brus etc too? I mean, where did that come from? The other day I wrote about food wastage and World hunger, and I get blasted for “wasting my time on this topic when there were so many YMA atrocities in Mizoram”. And when I wrote about sexual discrimination and the status of women in our society, there are people who said this was an unnecessary topic and there are much more serious topics like Corruption among our Politicians. It would be nice if we can go from one topic to the other at an appropriate time.

I mean to say exaggerately that why Mizo people do admire foreign terms and want to have them for our names and for the names of our school, shop, workshop, organization. newspaper, etc etc. e.g Joseph L. Ralte, Kedneddy Chama( Hei phei hi chu hnam, family hming leh nghal, Kedneddy hnamah sa an phun em mi?), Arcadia furniture w/s, Bezalel steel fabrication, Litlle Kingdom School, Mt.Carmel School, Evening Post, Sunday Post, The Zozam Times(written in Mizo)etc etc other than our own mizo lovely terms like MUP, MHIP, TNT, Mizo Aw, Mizo Arsi, Virthli, Ralvengtu etc etc

Had the manufacturing coy. for motor vehicles been establised, run, and owned by Mizos in Mizoram we would probably have named them in english term unlike Kawasaki, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Toyata, Hyundai, Mahindra etc etc.

All I can tell U is unless we mizos stop admiring, covetting foreign terms for naming yourselves and your properties our lovely mizo names and terms would hardly crossed Mizoram boundary and I’m sure they would never sworn in the book of Engish Dictionary like Tsunami.

No one can best the khasis and the Garos when it comes to names. trust me ive liven in shillong for over 10 years and i have the strangest names as friends and neighbors. lemme share the few.
i had a neighbor who unfortunately died a few years ago named teapot. we affectionally call him bah Teapot. he has a son named Pollenstar (i wonder where that came from)
a classmate named colorful wallang. independence (female names). witty, solace, nevermore (cong more) highlight. etc
garo names hitler, reporter. jughead archie (garo/ khasi). and my personal favourite a driver names his kids as first gear, gear, 3 gear and 4 gear…damn they’re good. and i once herd of a guy whos name was ironically ” what is your name?” with the ‘?’ mark as a part of the name. hahahaha. and i kno a bhutaneese girl names “ZANGMO” i dont think any decent self respecting mizo man would marry someone with that name. ..imagine this in the church ..”i pronounce you Sangkima and ZANGMO husband and wife”.. it would be terrible verbally abusing ur wife everytime you affectionally call her name. imqnging making love to her in the heat of the moment it would be like making love to a man hahahahahahahaha zang mooooooooooooooooo. so in conclusion dont even stres about bein called zerry or pe terra or what ever coz ur lucky it still sounds like a name.
