for the record… “zh” as in Alapu(zh)a is pronounced more like an “r”, but not exactly “r”. Its like trying to say ‘za’ with the tip of the tongue folded backwards, and a blow of air between the tongue and the ‘roof of the mouth’ (can’t think of a better term). this applies for things like Kozhikode and Pazham (banana).

by the way… the “coconut beer” is called Todi. It’s not distilled and mostly fermented in a pot placed on the top of the coconut tree itself
