Digicam for parents and grandparents
May 12th, 2008 2:01 am | Tech trek trek | benjamin | 91 viewsI told a friend I am looking for an entry level digicam that is cheap, takes good pictures and rough for village use in Mizoram. And that I have almost decided on Canon PowerShot A460 which is priced Rs.6,170.00 at GK Vale.
He replied he got Canon A720 IS for 180 USD in US. It has image stabilization. Good for parents.
What is image stabilization (IS) and why it should be good for parents?
And he replied “so that even with shaking hands, they can take great photos”. Image Stabilization (IS) is Canon’s term. Nikon calls it’s Vibration Reduction (VR). Both are same.
Each stabilizes images from the jiggly effects of hand-holding. It helps replace a tripod for making sharp photos. IS and VR let me shoot in bad light and forget a tripod, except for the most formal night shots.
So, should I by a digicam with SI or VR?
I have not owned or used one. But if you are willing to pay the money and the intended user has shaking hands, go for it.
I am young and got steady hands. Do I still need image stabilization?
I was off to Reliance Digital at Cunningham Road on Saturday. The sales rep asked me to rapidly shake my hands while he clicked a shot with Kodak M863 (with image stabilization).
To my surprise, the picture was not blur. It showed clear still picture of my hands. Image stabilization helps shooting objects in motion too.
What digicam in your experience is suited for older people? I am not the digicam expert. Do pitch in and share you digicam knowledge.

IS/VR should be of great help when you use zoom. Because when you use zoom, the camera is shaky when hand-held, and these days almost all digital cameras come with zoom.
As for my personal preference I’ll go for Canon for a Point & Shoot and Nikon for an SLR. Though you can’t really go wrong with either of these two brands.
Why canon for point & shoot? They are usually loaded with features and take great pictures (personal experience). And they have a good presence in India for after sales service.
And why Nikon for SLR? I guess this is out of context Anyway
Nikon Lens (Nikkor) are considered to be superior.
