Aizawl Nov 26: Following Phuaibuang village blocking the road to Khawlian since Saturday after the former alleged that a girl of their village was gang raped by the youths of the latter and a procession taken out in protest, the Students Union of Khawlian has come out with a PR saying the rape allegation was false.

According to the press release, Laldingngheta of Khawilian had eloped with his girlfriend, Ely of Phuaibuang village on November 18 and taken her to his home and with the girl’s consent. The girl, however, baulked when she saw the boy’s home and saw that they were very poor. She returned the next day to her village leaving her boyfriend. The boy’s parents sent emissaries to the girl’s parents as was the tradition and while it was believed a marriage could take place, flase charges began to surface resulting in Phuaibuang village declaring a war on Khawlian village.

Apparently, a rumour had started that the girl was gang raped by the boy and his friends after which the girl fled back to her village.

“Anyone coming from Khawlian to Phuaibuang to have peace talk have been sent back and all vehicles coming to Khawlian has also been blocked. After carefully studying the situation, we have come to the conclusion that this is a personal vendetta of a certain person we strongly condemn this government employee in turning the people against us with lies,” the release said without mentioning the person’s name.

The release also said the blockade had prevented supply vehicles from entering Khawlian which has brought the dark specter of starvation in the villagers’ faces. “We appeal to the authorities to sort out this matter and to take appropriate action against the government employee,” the release stated.

Police officials said a team of police from the Saitual police station have been dispatched to sort out the matter and that talks are going on to settle the dispute. The officials, however, said it was very difficult to contact the police team because of telecommunication problems and can be contacted only through wireless sets.

“We believe the matter will be settled soon. But we cannot get updates as often as we would like because these villages can only be contacted with the wireless sets of our police team,” Rodingliana Chawngthu, Additional SP, Aizawl District told this newspaper this evening.
