If you are a first time Linux user, Ubuntu is the way to go. Most modern distros have easy options to setup dualboot during installation. I don’t know what kind of partition manager the installer comes with. Some distros come with partition manager that can even resize existing partitions. The classic way is to use fdisk, something newbies shouldn’t try.
Distro watch tells me it is now called aLinux. The latest version is 12.8. You ISO is way to old today. From this review of 12.5 version , it (the installer) appears it isn’t userfriendly after all. I suggest you try Ubuntu, SuSE or Fedora Core instead. -benjamin

Tawia: when it comes to installer, there’s a vast difference between distros.
March 3rd, 2007 at 10:59 pm
Yup mmnowlucl. You can even downlock virtual appliance for Linux.
March 4th, 2007 at 2:26 pm
@Ben: I will still argue that its more or less the same. The GUI may change, questions asked may change, but the basic remains the same. in some distros it will automatically partiotion your disk for you, but then in most of the distros there will be an option to manually change the partition. So i still stand firm
March 4th, 2007 at 2:29 pm
i forgot to mention many of them uses (The red hat family) uses Anaconda installer.

- Perhaps you haven’t tried much distros. Every distro have their own goal and target user. Accordingly they build their installer. Some don’t have GUI. For newbies, it could be a real problem.
What if the installer only has fdisk where the flexibility is itself an issue for noobs. Having the option to decide the cylinder where a partition should begin is cool but not for the noobs. Having cfdisk around helps. But some geeks trust only fdisk.
The installer is the first impression anyone would have on a distro and means a lot especially to first timers.
Give a debian woody disk to a noob, I am a sure he wouldn’t like it unless he’s got a great passion to learn.
Legend says Debian upgrade didn’t need reboot so developers didn’t care about the installer and was left behind for ages. But since Sarge, a lot has happened.
If you look at Gentoo, you have the option to compile from the base system and is no no for noobs. The approach itself is entirely different. Look at LFS, you really have to build it for days.
Some still don’t have GUI. Some have both. Debian’s classic installer is pretty much different from Anaconda based. The latest Ubuntu’s GUI is darn simple, you invoke it after booting the Live CD which is also the install disk. The steps involved is very minimal.
Every installer will let you partition the disks as you like. It’s auto partition option that wouldn’t find every where.
The aim is to put the OS on the hard drive and make it bootable. But the installer can make it heaven or hell for noobs. Look at RHEL or FC or even SuSE, you still need freaking many disks to install even if you do a minimal install. Debian based distros need just one disk to get a system up and running and whatever you need, you simply apt-get install later.

Linux hian direct in FAT32 leh NTFS te hi a hmu ve thei lo tlangpui a (Ka hriat chinah chuan Mandriva chiahin a hmu nghal)
- Installer in a mount nghal tihna anih chu. Use the command mount to see the mounted filesystem and see if your fat partition is mounted. If not you have to mount it manually. Ubuntu ,Mepis etc.. te pawn existing FAT parition chu a mount nghal.

- Dump Lilo. Grub is the way to go today.

Windows a paih i tih khan Windows a luh theih loh nge Windows-a luh theihna turin option a pe lo (Operating System thlan tur a pe em?).
- I think he deleted his windows partition. If he run fdisk -l as root and paste the output here, it would tell us more.

i have tried fedora, ubuntu, RHEL, Mandrake,
They are almost the same. Perhaps i didnt notice a big difference (taking in view of how a noob will see it), Anyway try it out, i strongly recomend Linux if u have 2 PCs with internet.
