Rich beggars can be choosers
By Vinita Bharadwaj, Staff Writer
Two years ago, Old Beggar Man, was in one of those quaint south Indian temple towns, where life is cheap, peaceful and, yes, cheap. He was sitting on what appeared to be a half-pavement that had everything but people on it. Old Beggar Man was thin but still looked healthy and he sat cross-legged as a matter of right and obstructed the path of anyone, who accidentally chose to walk on the pavement.
He was also strategically located next to a street stall that sold “Special Fresh Joos”. With a stained and tattered Madras cotton towel spread out in front of him, the beggar called out to everyone at the stall in a nasal bleat and openly asked customers to give him the change they were returned after paying for their juice.
I’ll be honest here. I don’t usually give money to beggars, simply because it’s rarely used for any good men opt for alcohol, kids sniff glue, women give it to their men who opt for alcohol. So, no, to money.
On this one instance, having been given Rs 1 as change, I decided to share. And I gave it to Old Beggar Man, who instead chose to toss it back at my feet. Thinking I might have given him some other currency, I picked it up and gave it back to him. He flung it back again and said: “What will this buy me? Looks like I should give you some change.”
Turns out beggars can be a demanding bunch. When narrating this incident, others shared similar experiences. One friend recalled how a beggar took the change and gave it to another beggar in front of the friend. While, another friend said that she gave change to one, only to find him eating at the same street stall that she later went to.
Also, if recent reports are to be believed, beggars are quite a rich bunch. According to estimates in the Indian media, beggars in the commercial capital of India, Mumbai make as much as Rs1.8 billion every year. Apparently on an average, beggars in the posh areas, make anywhere up to $108 a day per person. Tax free.
The majority of these beggars live in the country’s slums and as various state and local governments try to implement schemes in a bid to reduce the incidence of begging on the streets, some young entrepreneurs have now found an alternative tourism tract and are offering slum tours in the Indian metros.
Supposedly a huge hit with the foreign tourist groups that want to get under the skin of Incredible India, for anywhere between $5 and $10 visitors are taken into the world where few Indians would dare venture.
This murky belly of Indian society, where life can be as cheap as $1, is the home to most of India’s beggars and as the doors are opened to tourists, the idea is clearly to make money out of exoticising squalor. Even though the official version is to bring attention to their living conditions.
Photography is prohibited in most parts except in those places where the residents have agreed. For a fee, of course. Some cynics have questioned the need for promoting slumming as a tourist activity. It’s certainly true that you don’t have to go looking out for it, as it’s almost always in your face. However, by entering this world, there have been many, who profess to have changed their priorities and perspectives. For the better, of course.
The tours itself, may not be entirely authentic as the slum dwellers and beggars guide you into their world. For real, you’ll be in their homes, watching their people and talking to them. However, they always let you see only what they want you to see. Nothing more, nothing beyond.
