Aizawl Nov 20: The zero Tolerance Week that the Aizawl Traffic Police began observing from yesterday has cleared the city streets of traffic jams much to the relief of both pedestrians and vehicle-borne people.
According to the police, they are keeping a close watch out for irregularities vehicle registration documents, driving licenses etc. While most vehicles that had been fined till today were because of invalid insurance paper papers, owners of vehicles with these invalid documents are claiming that they are getting problems in insuring vehicles from the insurance companies.
Two insurance companies, Oriental and United India, when contacted today, denied ever having refused to insure vehicles whether they are new or old.
“We have never refused to insure vehicles because they are old or decrepit. In a vehicle is a bit old, we insist an inspection of the vehicle and tell the owners to bring their vehicles. Some owners, however, choose not to bring their vehicles and opt for not insuring them,” L.T. Lotha, branch manager of the Oriental Insurance Company said today when contacted.
A representative of the United India Insurance Company also said they have never refused to insure vehicles regardless of its condition. He, however, said there had been some occasions when they refuse to insure an aged vehicle which had earlier been insured with another company.
“Even then, we tell the owners to approach the insurers who had first insured their vehicles,” the representative said.
According to figures given out by the police, a total of 128 vehicles were fined yesterday filling police coffers with a total fine of Rs 24,050. Today’s figure was less with 97 vehicles compounded with a total fine of Rs 20,0625.
Last years Zero Tolerance Week also held in November had yielded a total fine of Rs 2,06,895 for 1098 compounded vehicles.
The Traffic Police office today said while the major offences this time were invalid insurance papers too, these vehicles were not compounded and let off without fines if the owners promptly renew their insurance papers. A few stray cases of vehicles parked in no parking zones were also encountered yesterday and today, according to the police.
