Math for Aizawl traffic solution

Aizawl Sept 6: In order to ease the state capital’s perpetual traffic jams, the state government has finally decided issue an order where taxis plying the city will run on alternate days according to their registration number.

- Newslink

How are they going to decide which Taxi would run on a given day? From the topic you might have been thinking wow!! what kind of complex algorithim they are going to apply. Read on..

“The Transport authorities have issued directions to the Aizawl Superintendent of Police to implement the order where taxis will ply on alternate days according to their registration number. For example, while all taxis having registration numbers that end in even numbers ply on Monday, all those with registration numbers ending in odd numbers will ply on Tuesday while those with even numbers will go off road,” the source said.

Imagine traffic cops asking each other “Is 0 odd or even?” How many taxis would be there bearing registration number ending with odd , and with even numbers. Well, the honourable anonymous source only said ” For example”. So I will avoid spitting more words about this.

The tunnel plan

To ease this, Chief Minister Zoramthanga had even explored an ambitious plan of cutting tunnels beneath the state capital. However, this has been abandoned after it was found to be too costly.

True. Yea,too costly and no benefit via compensation money unless one got property underground except your toilet pit.

Another wild imagination

Another measure that the state authorities had contemplated was the construction of elevated roadways. However, this too was not viable as space could not be found to place the pillars.

Ngaizel to New Baga Bypass Road.. kan hlim kan leng kan ride kan fawr

There currently is a plan for a bypass that would start from the northern part of the city to the south which is mainly meant for goods vehicles such as trucks.

This sounds more reasonable and practical. Hey, know what I am thinking? Such bypass road would mean a new dating route for the guys and chicks in Aizawl to go quality time together. However, right from the planning stage provision should be made for YMA duty post since they are likely to be there anyway.

Ground them too

Meanwhile, the taxi owners and drivers have made a demand to the government that a ‘no vehicle day’ be implemented by the state government for government vehicles if the odds and evens registration number plan is to be implemented. However, the government has not seen this fit to be considered.

True colors.

And my idea

This is something which the bold and English Post Graduate in the CM’s Bungalow should listen.

To reduce traffic during peak hours

1) All institution other than colleges should begin the day’s session not later than 8 AM.

2) All goverment offices should start working from 10:30 AM

With #1 and #2 in place, vechicles ferrying Govt. employees to offices will not find themselves on the road side by side with vehicles ferrying kids to school. Also, those relying on the city bus would find it more comforable since there would hardly be any school student by the time they board the bus. This will force students and parents to get up early which is very very healthy.

3)Strictly “No vendor” on footpaths on Saturdays in places like Thakthing, Dawrpui, Chandmari etc.. Instead, we should make Chaltlang field, College Veng field, Brigade Area and the likes with plenty of space for vechicular movement and parking into makeshift sabji market for the weekend. Vendors should take care of cleaning the playground. And they shouldn’t park their asses in these places the whole day. Players need to use it too. They should wind up not later than 11 AM .

4) LAD garbage trucks should keep off places such as Bara Bazaar, Vaivakawn etc..on Saturday mornings. Why the hell are they trying to do their job on the one morning when the whole town is out shopping for vegetables and groceries.

5) Just becuase we go to somebody’s wedding or funeral, we should stop giving ourselves the right to park vehicles wherever. We should take extra care to avoid disturbing traffic flow as much as possible even if it means longer walk to the place. Let us sacrifice the convenience for the rest of the people in the city. The local YMA can help with this, beyond their “Drive Slow – Thanks” , “Muang changin aw – Kan lawm e” boards.

6) Temple – Vaivakawn and Chandmari West – Vaivakawn roads be made “one way” during peak hours. The former for coming up and the later for going down. Well, I see a problem here. This arrangment would hardly hit people with their own vechicle but those commuting between these junctions via city bus and share taxi would face more problem. How about if bus coming from Vaivakawn to Temple proceed towards Chandmari non-stop after 8 ? If traffic flow between Temple and Chandmari has considerably improved with solutions #1-6, this plan might just work.

Very good. But i think offices should start at 9:30. This still would leave an hour and a half gap with the school timings.

What about…only people who will build a garage for their vehicles be allowed to own cars? In Singapore (maybe more places too) you can own as many vehicles as you want as long as you can park it on your own space. Kan kawng zauh ve deuh leh motor kan park tam ni ringawt!
