Sandman on ChinkyISM and his chick farm

We have known the man for “Inter-racial Relation” and it’s second part which are very well written but too much for me since I have a big problem with “Intra-racial Relation” itself , “Mizo Names” and many other well written and worth to read articles in his blog.

This time, the man tells us being labelled “Chinky” is an insult, Asian equivalent of “Nigger” for blacks, even marked “Offensive” in slang directionary.

hahaha lal ammi, i duh vak na nge i pic ka lo dah khi…. hyuk hyuk hyuk…. anyway, the picture is a part of my post where I was trying to compare the Indian picture perfect face to our faces.

I already told most of the girls I am putting their pic and they don’t mind. Nang chauh in i duh la a nih kha, Beyonce i atchilh lai a nih vang mai khan…

Ever since I got my nokia 3650 phone cam, I’ve been clicking away whenever I am with my friends. I have more than 4000 snaps taken from my phone cam stored in my PC now! Below is a collage of some of my closest friends over the past 2 years.

L-R: Amol, Shubha, Izzy, Ankita, Monu, Amra, Sowmya, Sanjeev, Adonica, Tommy, Kini and Amar. Amazing bunch of friends. My greatest treasure. They have what one might say a “typical Indian face”. And people will always associate such faces with India.

Below is another collage of some of my closest Mizo friends taken with the same phone cam over the same period of time.

The difference between this set and the previous set is that, the second group is usually not identified as an Indian face. They are insulted as “chinky” on the streets and even called “Chinese” even though they are as Indian as the people who called them are. They are all working/studying in Bangalore and everyday they have to not only put up with eve-teasing but also try to ignore racial slurs hurled at them from all directions.

My aim was to write about how our faces are not identified as an Indian face and the racial abuses we face everytime. The main aim of my post was to inform others who use the word “chinky” on their blogs and in their daily conversations that it is a derogatory racial slur. Many of these guys think “chinky” is how any NE person is identified. In my three years as a blogger, I have enlightened many renowned and respected bloggers about the use of chinky and many of them have indeed stopped using it too. The word may not hurt the sentiments of some people, but there are also many people offended by this slur and I am atleast happy I managed to prevent atleast a few such incidents from occuring again.

J, neither am I offended by the word alone. All my closest frens call me chinky. I am offended because of the way strangers cuss at me using such a word. There’s a difference between the two.

A regular follower of my blog will know that I for one am the last person to be insulted by the word “chinky”.

I guess one reason why the word doesn’t mean anything to me is because of my upbringing. I’ve always been in a really diverse multi-cultured gang of friends where we used to utter racial slurs, expletives and other profanities freely at each other and none of us were the least bit offended by any of those “insults” as we were the closest of all friends (which doesn’t mean that we utter racial slurs at other people we don’t know. This was strictly only within our gang thingie). We still use those words even today (Read my upcoming post on “Racism: When is it “ok” to use Racial slurs?”).

You’re in Mizoram sweetie. Nobody would spit at you or throw garbage at you and scream out “chinky ching chong” when you are walking on the street. My post was for other Mizos and many other Northeastern peeps studying/working outside the North East.
