“The ravaging of paddy fields by Mautam rodents should be officially recorded by the Agriculture department because the records of the state’s rice harvest can automatically be seen from it. This true record can be utilized for getting relief funds from the Central government.”
- C. Thanchhuma IAS, Aizawl DC
Aizawl, Nov 20: In the ongoing effort to combat and prevent further damage of rice fields by rodents, 90,568 rodent tails purchased during November 1 to 16 by the Aizawl district Agriculture department was burnt today at the New Capital Complex under the supervision of C. Thanchhuma, Deputy Commissioner Aizawl district.
Speaking at the function C. Thanchhuma said, “The ravaging of paddy fields by Mautam rodents should be officially recorded by the Agriculture department because the records of the state’s rice harvest can automatically be seen from it. This true record can be utilized for getting relief funds from the Central government.”
In the continuing effort to prevent the uncontrollable outbreak of Mautam rats, the state had been offering Rs. 2 for every rat tail. 1,01,674 rat tails have been burnt so far and about 6,000 more rat tails have been purchased by the Aizawl district DAO to be burnt with other rat tails that are still coming in.
According to the Agriculture department, as much as 1509.30 hectare of rice have been destroyed by Mautam rats in 2006 in Aizawl district alone with 1936 families affected by the destruction. In 2007, the damage caused by the rats has worsened to a higher extent with 3402 families reported to lose their paddy fields through the rat attacks.
Reports also claim that of the paddy fields destroyed, 80% is due to Mautam rats while the other 20% is due to birds and other species of animals and insects. The distribution of rat poison to farmers has helped to a huge extent but with the rats reproducing at a fast rate, farmers are not optimistic that any of their paddy fields would be saved from the rodents’ attacks.
