India’s ‘Anti-Conversion’ Laws Linked to Higher Persecution

March 4th, 2007 5:28 pm by wo

(Compass Direct News) – With the governor of Himachal Pradesh approving an “anti-conversion” bill last week, India now has seven states with legislation banning unregistered or unethical religious conversions – to the glee of Hindu extremists who arbitrarily invoke them to quash Christian growth.

On February 20, Governor Vishnu Sadashiv Kokje gave his assent to the Himachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Bill 2006, which was passed in the state assembly by the Congress party last December 30

Living in a modern world, do we have the right to convert other people to our own religion? We can preach the Gospel, but the Bible does not tell us to convert people. Preach the Gospel and if people want to become a Christian, its well and good. I don’t believe in telling the story again and again until out of boredom (or to get rid of the preacher), someone becomes a Christian. Or becomes a Christian to get material benefits. A true missionary works not to make Christians of others, but to live like Christ would have liked us to live – which is “love they neighbour as thou love thyself”.

India is a secular state which means there should be no bias towards a particular religion. It can also mean that one is free to practise his own religion. No one should be forced.

no one has the right to convert another person, a person joins a religon because of his own convictions, it’s also true that some churches entice people to convert for economical benefit too. I also think it’s important for churches to also tread a fine line between culture and religon. see what has happened to the mayan and Aztec civilization, all their past glory has been burned by the missionaries on grounds that they were all devil worship, maybe some of their practice was wrong, but some of their cultures are part of their identity, that’s basically the reason that christianity is seen as a threat as people change even their names, of course in the Indian context, christianity emancipates many of the low caste people who are destined to a life of hardship – who once they join christianity became equal with others so I guess it’s important for us to remember, that it’s equally important to respect other people’s culture.
