So, have we Mizos finally qualified to be called a community of cheaters? The writer at newslink.in seems to think so, although the actual author’s name is not mentioned. The most interesting thing is that the writer has also linked our corruption to our Christianity.

However, teachers are not the only cheaters in the Mizo society. In fact, the Mizo community is a community of cheaters which deludes itself into thinking that Christianity makes it as white as the freshly fallen snow. Apart from other instances that can be quoted to drive home the point that the Mizo community is a community of cheaters, it would suffice to bring out the latest incident of cheating where farmers themselves did not hesitate to indulge in cheating by mixing the turmeric seed they supply to the state government with ginger and false turmeric variety.

I guess everyone will have different opinions on the article. Personally, while I think we Mizos have lost a lot of our legendary honesty and ‘tlawmngaihna’, to be generalized as a community of cheaters is a little harsh for me . On the other hand, this article could be a wake-up call for everyone of us.

i called my teachers as “TEACHERS”. i love them. without them…i’d be nobody….coz my teachers work hard, they really do and i hate someone calling them as cheaters…i hav no opinion for other school teachers….my teachers really shouldered their responsibilities…

I read it too. Incidentally, the first copy of my Newslink subscription came yesterday.
As we see on the website, there are foreign visitors to the site and
there’s a good chance of this article being understood in it’s literal perspective which in all likeliness does little justice to our society as I know it.
I wondered if this article brought out the true intention of the writer or if it’s just another case of wasted eloquence. The words used are quite harsh and may have yet another round of repercussions if this article attracts a larger audience.
I’m not going to attempt interpreting what the writer means by calling mizos ‘Cheaters’. Even tho I myself am not perfect, I wouldn’t like to be called a ‘Cheater’. Although I’m sure I am, have been and will be cheated by Politicians and Govt. Servants alike, I have no proof (yet) and I can’t rightfully call them cheaters.

About farmers and other poor people,who really cares whether they are cheaters or not.I mean they need money and all,but politicians ? Why cheat when you have all the luxuries in life?I am not trying to support farmers to cheat but really, if politians cheat what can be done???
I just don’t see why politicians have to cheat people so much, but I would’nt go too far as to say that mizos are all cheaters.We are not qualified to be called a community of cheaters.

The writer quotes AR Kohli’s remark about teachers being cheaters because a lot of them don’t actually stay and work at their postings.
imho, to hyperbolize it to the extent of indiscriminately calling all Mizos cheaters is a bit reckless.

Seems to me more like the writer, probably dmt, has a major issue with Mizo Christianity. And to some extent, our kind of Christianity does seem a bit off sometimes. Like we drone on and on about corruption but what is really done to curb that tendency at grassroots level? As a teacher, I have to supervise students during their exams and the way they behave in the exam halls is something that reveals our pathetic ethics, morals and principles. Or lack of them rather. Looking at them peeping over each other’s papers, consulting each other, occasionally even blatantly cheating, it doesn’t surprise me abit that corruption is so rampant in our society. We don’t teach ethics, morals and principles at all so how can we possibly hope to be ethical, honest etc? I’d really like all schools at the primary to middle school levels to have Moral Science in their syllabi. That’s my two cents worth of contribution to the problem.
Btw, “cheating” is a very strong word. I wouldn’t use it lightly.

I personally think that one of the reasons that Govt employees are against Health Insurance is that they would not be able to submit fraud bills as these bills will be scrutinized and approved by empaneled clinics leaving less scope for cheating. I don’t think we mizo’s are a community of cheaters but I think we need a good system of check and balance against cheating or corruption.
the 6% of Mizo people still need more ways to eat out the govt i guess!

I think we need to distinguish between village Mizos and City/Big town mizos. There is a stark difference. We are no longer a classless society.
