Dengue fever

October 2nd, 2006 9:00 am by zualtei

I seem to be the self-appointed bringer of bad tidings. But with one dead and several sick in AIIMS itself, I thought I should put up a few pointers about dengue. You may already be well informed but here goes.

Dengue is caused by a virus which is transmitted by the bite of Aedes mosquito, which mostly bites in the daytime. It has very prominently striped legs. So bring out the Odomos and the Allouts.

Symptoms are not very specific..fever, pain behind the eyes, and backache (break-bones fever). This stage does not need much treatment. Just paracetamol to bring down the fever and PLENTY OF FLUIDS. Also very important is DO NOT USE ASPIRIN (It has anticoagulant side effects so it will worsen any bleeding tendencies)

Its only when you start getting reddish rashes (first on the trunk then to the extremities and face) and bleeding from weird places that you need to worry. Otherwise dengue is self limited. You do not need to use antibiotics.

So if you get fever and symptoms suggestive of Dengue:
1)Get your blood counts done esp PLATELET COUNT (Should be atleast 100,000/ml)
2)IF you can, get dengue serology done (You just need to give 3-4 ml of blood for this)
3)Do not take ASPIRIN to bring down the fever.
4)Take the week off, relax and drink plenty of fluids.
5)Visiting a doctor is not a bad idea, especially if rashes or bleeding is seen.

Hope that was useful.

Great job and keep doing. Looks like there’s already a portfolio here – Health issues. Are you into mede\icine by any chance? Perhaps, you could be an author which means you could publish your own content. Lemme know.

I’ve seen people on NDTV pronounce it as deng-ghee (ghee as in how we pronounce ghee in Mizo… geeu).
