Reliance Retail opens shop

The new venture by Mukesh, Reliance Retail kicked off with its first set of 11 pilot stores of Reliance Fresh in Hyderbad . As you know, this is the older Ambanis’s new brainchild after Infocomm which goes to Anil after their settlement.

It is said RIL will set up one such retail store for every 3,000 families which would involve a Rs. 25,000-crore investment, creating half a million jobs.

Earlier in June, RIl announced it will invest 5.6 billion in retail which screwed the shares of Pantaloon, India’s largest retailer that also owns Big Bazaar and Food Bazaar. Two of my newest underpants were purchased from Pantaloons store :-D

Pantaloon is coming to Airports, plans to offer services such as airline and train ticket booking from their stores.

Both RIL and Pantaloon are doing wholesale too.

Earlier this year, Food World stores in some part of the country such as Chennai became Spencer’s Daily. This is because RPG broke ties with partner Dairy Farm International. 49 stores that went to RPG were renamed.

Hmmm, enough of retailing today. Feel free to correct me where I go wrong.

So when do we get to see retailers and wholesalers the size of Walmart, Best Buy, Target, CompUSA, Circuit City, Sams Club in India?
