Jack Sparrow has done it again ;)

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

On a personal note, the first part was better. But then, I guess I was expecting too much of the movie.
BTW, Was it the LOTR or Titanic that crossed $1Billion?

“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” ruled the foreign box office for an eighth weekend, grossing an estimated $17.8 million from 48 territories.

Disney’s seafaring sequel has now earned $554.7 million internationally; including its North American haul, the global total stands at $962.3 million.

Disney expects the title to surpass within a week the global gross of 2001’s ”
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” ($976.5 million), which would make “Dead Man’s Chest” the third-biggest worldwide box office smash of all time.

Web Guitar Wizard Revealed at Last

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006
In case you find the link to this video in YouTube, please post it here. :)

EIGHT months ago a mysterious image showed up on YouTube. A sinewy figure in a swimming-pool-blue T-shirt, his eyes obscured by a beige baseball cap, was playing electric guitar. Sun poured through the window behind him; he played in a yellow haze. The video was called simply “guitar.” A black-and-white title card gave the performer’s name as funtwo.

If individual viewings were shipped records, “guitar” would have gone gold almost instantly. Now, with nearly 7.35 million views — and a spot in the site’s 10 most-viewed videos of all time — funtwo’s performance would be platinum many times over.

Guitar fanatics are perplexed: “How the hell does he gets his harmonics to sound like that?” Some praise specific components of the performance, including the distortion, the power chords or the “sweet outro.” Overall a consensus emerges: This guy iz great.

I’m shocked at how much you rock,” one fan said. “Funtwo just pure ownz the world,” said another. “Somebody just beat JerryC at his own song,” tinFold44 said. Carrie34 gushed, “funtwo’s version makes me want to hold up my lighter and *hug* my inner child! :) ”

The most basic comment is a question: Who is this guy?

Some imitators have gone further than that. A Malaysian guitarist claiming erroneously to be funtwo briefly set up a MySpace page, then shut it down. And this month, in Washington, a 12-year-old classical pianist named Alfonso Candra played “Canon Rock” for a small crowd at the Indonesian Embassy. He too claimed he was the guitarist in the “guitar” video. That was untrue, but Alfonso played his heart out.

By following a series of clues on JerryC’s message board and various “Canon Rock” videos, I was able to trace funtwo’s video to Jeong-Hyun Lim, a 23-year-old Korean who taught himself guitar over the course of the last six years. Now living in Seoul, he listens avidly to Bach and Vivaldi, and in 2000 he took a month of guitar lessons. He plays an ESP, an Alfee Custon SEC-28OTC with gold-colored detailing.

I asked Mr. Lim about the huge response to the video he had made in his bedroom. What did he make of the tens of thousands of YouTube commenters, most of whom treat him as though he’s the second coming of Jimi Hendrix?

Mr. Lim wrote back quickly. “Some said my vibrato is quite sloppy,” he replied. “And I agree that so these days I’m doing my best to improve my vibrato skill.”

Varakh: Not Mizo Varak

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

Call it pathetic, call it strange but its true. You might think twice about eating those silver coated sweets hehe. As usual, Maneka Gandhi appears in this article. :P

A couple of years ago, Indian Airlines, the domestic air-carrier of India issued instructions to its suppliers to supply sweet without silverfoil called VARAKH. Silver is widely used for various purposes in the market today and is considered precious.

The reason behind this is that silver reflects back 95% of the light energy that falls on it. The silver foils used for edible purpose is called VARAKH. So what’s so special about VARAKH?

If you keenly observe this VARAKH under a microscope, don’t get disturbed if you happen to see traces of blood, stools and saliva of a cattle or ox. VARAKH is a silver foil and to prepare this VARAKH important parts of the CATTLE/OX are used. Intestines of Cattle/OX are obtained from the slaughterhouse.

This is obtained after butchering to death the cattle/ox for beef and the part, which cannot be consumed: the intestines are pulled out of the animal and handed over to the manufacturers of VARAKH. Before handing over the intestines, they are washed in the slaughterhouse to get rid of the blood and other remains on these intestines in the limited facility that is present in the slaughterhouse. We are not sure how neatly this job is carried out.

Intestines are cut into small pieces and then are bound together as pages in a notebook. A silver block is placed in the middle of these bound intestines, and the whole thing is placed in a leather bag and sealed.

Experts, who know how to make VARAKH, pound the bag with wooden sticks, till the entire bag flattens out. The silver block would by this time be turned into silver foil. This Silver foil would now be separated from the intestine pack and will be placed on paper. This is VARAKH, which reaches the market ready for use. Even staunch vegetarians, who shy away from egg, unknowingly consume this as a part of sweet, pan and arecanut. Some unknowingly consume this because of the additional taste that VARAKH provides.

Now the question is “Why the intestines of the cattle/ox? Why not something else?” The reason behind using the intestines of the cattle/ox for preparing the VARAKHis because of the elasticity of the intestines. They do not get cut even after a severe pounding. This aspect is brought out in the magazine “Beauty without cruelty” and the Television show of Maneka Gandhi, “Heads and Tails”. In India, on an average an estimate indicates that 2,75,000 kilos of ” VARAKH” is consumed.

Singer Mami Varte was online at #QuestionAir channel at Zotalk server to answer questions from fans. Talking about fans I think there are three kinds

* Those who like her voice
* Those who like her face
* Those who like both

When asked the kind of men she admires she replied ,”Fel a ni top mai…hehe”. As Dingi did on her website before she got married, she denied having cellphone.

Is V-a mentioned here Mami’s dad? Someone asked about her dad’s bike.

Dixie Dregs

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

The Dixie Dregs evolved from an Augusta, Georgia band called The Dixie Grits featuring Steve Morse, Frank Brittingham, Johnny Carr and Andy West in the late 1960’s. Carr was later replaced by keyboardist Mark Parrish. Morse, West, Parrish, Brittingham and Frayer performed briefly as a quintet, continuing to call themselves The Dixie Grits. After Frank Brittingham left in 1972, Morse, West, Parrish, and Frayer remained: thus, the “Dregs” of “The Dixie Grits”.

In 1973, Steve Morse (guitar), Andy West (bass), Allen Sloan (violin) and Bart Yarnal (drums) met while students at the University of Miami’s School of Music to play as Rock Ensemble II. West also attended Georgia State University for a year while studying cello and music theory & composition along with Parrish. Parrish remained at GSU during the academic school years only to return to Augusta, Georgia during summer breaks – re-establishing the guitar/bass/keyboards/drums quartet with Morse, West, Parrish, and Frayer performing as opening acts for concerts and headlining local gigs as the Dixie Dregs.

During subsequent academic school years, the remaining members of the Dregs — including Andy West — returned to the University of Miami and Mark Parrish returned to Atlanta, Georgia to complete his degree in music performance and composition at Georgia State University under the study of William Masselos, with additional studies of electronic music at Columbia University in New York City under Alice Shields – a protége of Wendy Carlos.

At the time, the University of Miami hosted a lively musical community, including future greats Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Danny Gottlieb, T Lavitz and Bruce Hornsby. Rod Morgenstein was asked to fill in as drummer after a surfing accident disabled Yarnal. In 1974, during the school years at UofM, keyboardist Frank Josephs was added to their lineup. In 1975, the group’s first effort, The Great Spectacular (aptly named by ex-“Dixie Grits” second guitarist and singer, Frank Brittingham) was recorded at the University. Although a few pressings were produced for radio promotional purposes, the album was never formally released until 1997.

Based on the strength of a three song demo and a tip from former Allman Brothers Band members Chuck Leavell and Twiggs Lyndon, Capricorn Records signed them in late 1976 to record Free Fall (1977). Former Dixie Grits/Dixie Dregs keyboardist Mark Parrish rejoined the group later that year. The moderate success and critical acclaim of “Free Fall” led to their 1978 effort, What If, supported by their first tour with dates in New York, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Arizona, Massachusetts, Mississippi, and California.

Their third album, Night of the Living Dregs (featuring Morse, West, Sloan, Parrish, and Morgenstein), was released in April of 1979, gaining the band their first Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance – won that year by Paul McCartney’s band Wings. Night of the Living Dregs included studio recordings as well as compositions performed live and recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 23, 1978. Ken Scott – The Beatles’ and producer/arranger George Martin’s right-hand man and engineer – produced both Dixie Dregs albums What If and Night of the Living Dregs. (more…)

World’s oldest person dies in Ecuador at 116

Monday, August 28th, 2006

Maria Esther de Capovilla, a 116-year-old woman believed to have been the world’s oldest person, has died on Sunday in her native Ecuador two days after coming down with pneumonia.

Born on Sept. 14, 1889 — the same year as Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler — Capovilla was married in 1917 and widowed in 1949.

She always ate three meals a day and never smoked or drank hard liquor — “Only a small cup of wine with lunch and nothing more” .
