Where to stay in Goa?

October 26th, 2007 2:04 am by benjamin rualthanzauva

Please share your Goa experience. I and a few friends are planning for a budget trip to Goa. Travel arrangement has been made. We would like to know:

1) Where to stay at economy rates? We dream of the huts.
2) How to move around? I read you could rent bikes, jeep.
3) What are places you must visit?

If you have been there, please share your experience. I haven’t done much research. Wikitravel has some information. Don’t miss the first point in this section :-).

Very important: Are there wine shops just around the corner? How much does beer cost? Have you tried fenny?

I’m an expert at this :) because I think I got the coolest deal when I went there last.

Accomodation – we took a double bedroom thingy in this family run place called Orange House, it was clean, two big beds, a TV and fridge, a really nice and clean bathroom with hot and cold water, and it cost only RS 180 a night, which meant just Rs 90/- per person – which I thought was as cheap as any decent room could get.

Anjuna, Bag & the other nicer beaches were only a few minutes ride away. We rented a scootie for Rs 100 a day, again Rs 50 per person, paid for our own petrol, which we hardly had to use, as we mostly just used it for going to and from the beach.

These might be downsides for you – I don’t think there were any beer places close to it, or maybe it was because we just didn’t look. But you can always run to the closest beach/market area where you can easily get them.

Alcohol is cheap. That’s all I remember. I don’t remember how much the beer cost, but I remember cocktails which cost Rs 375 in Hyderabad cost only Rs 100 there, so that was pretty cool.

I didn’t try fenny, I was told it stinks, and that it’s nothing great. Mizoram local nen a in an duh hmel ka ti risk ve thruai :) And I hear it makes you smell like it for the next whole day, zurui rim nam huam dawn tihna nih ber chu :)

I like my vacations to be lazy and just..lazy. Which meant the whole time I was there, I would spend the entire day on the beach, doing nothing much, and just go home to sleep. Get up and pack up and run off to the beach and again laze around and eat and drink all day. I didn’t see anything. But it was heaven.

Stayed at Calangute when I went there. It’s the typical Goa that tourists think about. Huts can start from as low as 100 per day. Most of them don’t serve food but it’s better anyway to eat out and soak in the atmosphere. But if you’re planning on going during the Diwali break – then would be better to book if possible (don’t know how to do that though).

However, other friends of mine prefer Palolem in south Goa since there are less tourists.

Beer would be about 25 or 30 bucks for a kingfisher.

Beaches ah sap nula chhe lo deuh deuh an tam mai… ha ha.

I went to a beach called Patnem Beach, small and quiet which is good if you want to just relax. Next to it is Palolem Beach. This is much bigger and lined up with shops and restaurants. I have several photos of the beach but I don’t know if I’m allowed to post it here.

There are many huts right on the beach. They cost anywhere between Rs.200 to Rs. 1000 per night depending on the I don’t know what. The more expensive huts have bathrooms attached while the less expensives ones share common bathrooms. No Tvs by the way. But who needs them on the BLEEP beach.

Most restaurants have wines and they are cheap, except the imported VSOP wines.

I think, though, the first comment is most useful for a budget trip.

PS: If you see a water board lying around don’t just use it. You will be surprised when you see your bill.

“Margao, Sept 24 It’s a question of a few hours, when tipplers in Margao and Vasco will have to go `dry’.

For the first time in Goa, bars will remain closed for five hours during the immersion procession of the Sarvajanik Ganesh idols in the twin towns of Margao and Vasco, on Tuesday, evening.

South Goa, District Magistrate, Mr G P Naik issued a notification, directing all bars and liquour outlets in Margao and Vasco to remain closed, from 3.00 pm to 8.00 pm.

Mr Naik was was prompted to issue the order, to ensure peaceful and orderly conduct of immersion of Sarvajanik, 11-day Ganesh idols.”
