Spastic Society lashes out at LPS Cable Network

I was deeply hurt and angered when I watched Youth Icon host Mali make fun of people born with mental disabilities.

Aizawl, Nov 7: LPS Cable TV network has come under fire from the Spastic Society of Mizoram for handing out ‘special’ certificates to mentally retarded people for their ‘special’ skills and making fun of them in the ongoing LPS Youth Icon Talent Hunt contest. “I am infuriated over their actions and demand that they apologize for their actions,” Chhingpuii, Secretary of the Spastic Society told this paper today.

Speaking to this paper, Chhingpuii said, “I was deeply hurt and angered when I watched Youth Icon host Mali make fun of people born with mental disabilities. She even had the nerve to say that mentally retarded people were born in this world to bring laughter to others. People with disabilities are protected by the People with Disabilities Act 1995 which states that the government of India protects the rights, privileges and dignity of all disabled persons. However, LPS does not respect the dignity of mentally retarded persons and mock at them.”

She went on to say that the Youth Icon show degrades the status of mentally retarded persons in the society, which the Spastic Society strongly stands against. “Our society strongly blames the actions taken by LPS over mentally retarded persons and demand that they respect the dignity of mentally retarded persons in the future,” she said. “The mentally retarded persons who performed at the show never tried to act funny or make fools of themselves,” she added.

Laldinpuii, Principal of the Gilead Special School also blamed the LPS Youth Icon show for making fun of mentally retarded persons. “I was heart-broken and could not believe what I was watching. I only watched the show a few minutes then turned it off as I was completely shocked by it. I would be much pleased if they apologize for their actions,” she said.

The Spastic Society of Mizoram formed in 1989 currently looks after 219 persons with disabilities including mentally retarded persons, persons with cerebral palsy/spastic and deaf and dumb persons. The Society had sent representatives to contest in the Abilympics – an event held for disabled persons where disabled persons contest in events where they can utilize their skills – in 2004 where H. Lalmalsawmi was selected to represent India in an international event for her skills in embroidery. The society is also planning to send more representatives in the next Abilympics to show off their skills scheduled to be held in Korea next year.

if it ever is true, then they really should be ashamed of themselves. There’s a limit for each joke, joke are not meant to hurt the feelings of other people or making fun of others on how they are born,which place they come from etc.. (something beyond humans’ control) is really appalling.

If knowingly, some people still chose to make fun of others like this, it tells so much of themselves, how rotten and pathetic they are. Engkim ni se, mawl em em vang mo le!! and nobody is gonna get any blessing by doing this type of things. Gracias.
