Metal Music

THRASH METAL
Characterised by a double speed drum pattern and grim, opressive riffs. This sound was to be labeled THRASH METAL and became very exciting. This was the first EXTREME METAL, which all began with the release of “Welcome to Hell” by Venom. Recognised by it’s sixteenth note strumming, thrash is nowadays regarded as quaint, as its heyday was in the eighties.
Thrash is sometimes mentioned as speed metal, but some insist that speed metal is more technical.
Example:Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Kreator, Deceased, Exodus, Testament, Sodom, Dark Angel, Overkill, Annihilator, Possessed, Hirax, Destruction

DEATH METAL
A more, primal form of thrash, but with often more brutal, heavier riffs and with usually growling, roaring, deeper vocal styles. This type of metal nearly always contains either brutal, gruesome and/or satanic lyrics. Other sub genres include Gore, Grind and a combination of both GoreGrind.
Example: Morbid Angel, Death, Necrophagia, Carcass, Autopsy, Cannibal Corpse, Vader, Mortician, Suffocation, Exhumed, Dismember, Malevolent Creation, Angel Corpse, Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, Amorphis, Nile, Decapitated, Hypocrisy, Amon Amarth

BLACK METAL
Black Metal originated from the Venom album “Black Metal” and in the beginning this tag was given to metal bands with dark, satanic lyrics (Bathory, Mercyful Fate etc.) Nowadays, a mixture of thrash and death metal using lightning fast snare and kick-drum patterns, but instead of the grunting vocals a more high pitched screeching is used. War-paint is also worn by the bands to make them look skull-like or demonic.
It has the same thumping beats as thrash but can have alot more melody with keyboards and ochestra’s but some bands like to use very lo-fi production values to give a very necro sound which overall creates a very unique type of music. This type usualy has evil, satanic lyrics.
Black Metal has been out of the music scene really for the last couple of years, but now it is back and going strong, with a very big fan base, mainly in Scandanavia, where nearly all the black metal sounds come from, (Burzum, Marduk, Mayhem, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, to name a few)
Example: Burzum, Marduk, Emperor, Mayhem, Bathory, Aborym, Immortal, Darkthrone, Thorns, Ulver

 POWER METAL
A very clean style based on monstrous riffs, often with thrash speed, but heavy in melody and harmonies, using Iron Maiden as its main influence.
Example: Iron Maiden, Bruce Dickinson, Iced Earth, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, Stratovarious, Jag Panzer Hammerfall, Primal Fear, Rhapsody

DOOM METAL
Doom Metal took Metal in the opposite direction, with slow tempos and deep vocals. It later included the gothic influences such as The Sisters of Mercy.
Example: Black Sabbath, Paradise Lost, Anathema, Cathedral, Katatonia, Candlemass, Trouble, Saint Vitus, Obssesed

Hey what about my favorite genre: GOTHIC METAL

Similar to BLACK METAL and DOOM METAL that you have mentioned above, Gothic Metal, also sometimes known as Scandinavian Symphonic Metal, has a very strong Scandinavian background and origin.

The band’s frontman is a woman, usually with a very high pitch voice, similar to an opera singer. The music is usually dark metal (any of the above mentioned genres) but with so many of these bands coming up, they soon formed their own genre. And the Music also usually has incantations and chants, or lyrics in Shakespeare kinda English.

Such type of bands were said to have been started by bands like Dead Can Dance and Theatres Des Vampires, which has a mix of both male and female vocals. Soon these went on a separate line with purely just a female vocals and maybe occasional male vocals here and there. Some of my favourites are Theatre of Tragedy, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Lunatica, Sengir, Inkubus Sukkubus, Leaves Eyes, Xandria, Dreams of Sanity, Lullacry, Breath of Life, Shellyz Raven, Atrox, Sirenia, Epica, Entwine, Lacuna Coil etc. I pride myself to having a very large Gothic music collection with more than 2000 songs on Gothic alone :-)

Even though some of my other favorite bands like Charon, Paradise Lost, HIM, Tristania, Axenstar, Tiamat etc are also called Gothic, nowadays, Gothic usually refer to those Metal bands with a female frontman (No there is no such thing as a frontwoman!)

Bottom line is, there is no clear cut definition for a particular type of music, with so many bands singing in so many different styles (Bryan Adams a pawh Rock category hnuai ah a lawm a awm. A hla “summer of 69” kha vai threnkhat chuan “rock” hla zingah “rocking” ber an tia lawm. hehehe)

A tha khawp mai Mr.Pervert hetiang te I rawn post hi. I have most of the bands you mentioned, and I love them all. It’s good to see there are still Metal lovers out there in today’s world which seem to be overtaken by Pop Gayband cultures and Hiphop that you can dance to but can’t sing or headbang to.

    Long Live Metal!

Ironically, most of the Gothic Metal or Death metal bands you have mentioned come from scandanavian countries. I swear, an ram awmna ho hi chu a “gloomy”-in, a depressing bawk ani!
Take Switzerland for example. A country with the highest per capita income, but also has the highest suicide rate.
    See what I mean?
