Good Music – Wherest art thou?

October 19th, 2006 5:51 pm by Goldmember

ive been listening to music ever since i heard my cousins play “livin’ on a prayer” and “you gee la bad man bad man” :) on their huge sanyo made in japan tape decks – the ones with the huge integrated speakers ; this must have been in 1988-89;

my baptism into rock music was when i first heard sweet child o’mine somewhere in the year 1990. from then on i was hooked; couldnt get enuff of rock music – bought every Metallica and GnR album; tried Floyd didnt like it… however The Doors and Led Zep were to my tastes.
Also ventured into Extreme and Faith No More (once when i was broke i exchanged my imported pen and 20 bucks for Faith No More’s Angel Dust album) i still love these bands and i still listen to them.

the years slowly rolled on – the Boyband invasion came and went; i stuck to my hard rock and maybe hard rock sounding pop coming out from the likes of Def Leppard and Mr.Big or Aerosmith.

other great bands that im also fond of are Radiohead, Collective Soul , The Eagles , PearlJam…and inspite of everyone 2nd person in India knowing the lyrics of Hotel California by heart i still love this song

Rap Music i didnt pay much heed to except for maybe 2Pac or Cypress Hill (as somep Mirc/aizawlchat regulars would remember i used to use Cypress Hill as my handle) and for a short while a friend introduced me to Arrested Development; I still consider ‘Mr Wendal’ to be a classic :) and yes MC Hammer was also a favorite (who can forget the billowy harem type pants :) )

I could listen to all the above mentioned bands (and many i didnt mention) these were bands i grew up listening to all thro the 90s

and then the 2000’s rolled on and i find that im still hooked to these bands. New bands such as Linkin Park/Creed/Audioslave etc came by – some made their mark and left and some stayed on;

Bands like Linkin Park Nickelback etc make popular music and i too used to rock to their songs but their songs didnt really make for repeat listening. Even my old favorites Metallica or Aerosmith came out with albums in recent years but i find that i don’t really like listening to their new songs anymore.

Def Leppard keep putting out crappy stuff every other year ; Bon Jovi keep churning out xerox copies of sappy love songs with every album. Metallica’s St.Anger made me really angry…

what im saying here is that the music being produced lately doesnt match up to the oldies; Or is it that im just hooked to the music that was ingrained in me when i was growing up?
would this generation of teenagers and youngsters consider the new metal bands of the current generation as their “classic rock”?

even the Rap music of the 90s is better than the stuff that passes of as Rap/hip hop nowadays!

all people seem to want is some fast dance tracks to shake a leg to; the other night i caught the ‘disco’ version of the Yes classic “owner of a lonely heart” and was also horrified to see another 80s classic – Don Henley’s Boys of Summer being remixed as a dance track..

but my main question is this – is today’s music going to be considered as ‘classic’ or ‘great’ music ten or fifteen years from now?

    Three days after your birthday and we’re already feeling the effects.You’re growing old, kid :)
    I feel the same about the new artists popping up all over the place. Was a big fan of Cranberries, Oasis, Alanis Morissette, etc but lately, their newer albums fail to impress. Have gone back to Tracy Chapman and old golds, and few new guys like jack Johnson, james blunt etc. Coldplay is much more consistently better than the rest tho.
    And I do hope today’s music will never be considered classic, even tho the present generation wil definitely think otherwise.

    I think music is a part of your self…or at least a part of your development as a person so we associate some music with our memories and that’s why we say music today isn’t what it used to be, it doesn’t move me etc etc. It’s all associative or relative or whateva. So yes, like you say you’re naturally hooked to the music that was ingrained in you when you were growing up.

    You don’t like Floyd? Mein Gott, The Wall was the greatest thing I ever heard in its time! And you sound like such an old man when you talk about being “horrified” that classics are being remixed as dance tracks. I’ve had so much music I’ve loved being bastarded around I’ve gotten immune to it…sigh. And some songs do actually sound a lot better than the originals like Sting’s Every Breath You Take and Puff Daddy’s remix of it, and I actually quite like Michael M Sailo’s remix of Perhkhuang etc etc

    thank you for your valuable inputs;

    hey its a free world i dont like Floyd you dont like Backstreet Boys but i dont say Mein Gott etc etc =)

    im an old man relatively speaking when it comes to rock music.. rock music is not even a hundred years old it must be like 50 years old at the most hehe and ive been around for half of those years :)

    i still like the the Police’s version of Every Breath you take (it wasn’t a sting song – it was a The Police song :) )

    i was a mighty big fan of Oasis when they first came out but their new offering is very average and Alanis’ new track sounds like some dance number or something.. i hate it when they experiment

    Hey I wasn’t saying saying Mein Gott because you don’t like Floyd (awiha!), I was saying it to illuminate how gazooking great The Wall was :D

    Btw, I didn’t answer your main question. (it’s the scatty way we women read things, in case you don’t know…sth to do with the way our brains works etc etc :D) I would imagine that in 10 to 15 years time, today’s music will be classified as classic trance, classic techno, classic gothic etc etc

    I don’t think you can just put down all music today as being inferior to the the ones in the past. I mean look at Norah Jones. She’s a genuine talent if ever I heard one. She’s a classic in her own right.
