Aizawl, Aug 16: Forty-seven hunger stricken families in Selam village crashed a state go-down in Kawlbem village on August 13, taking out rice stocks from the go-down as they were dying from hunger, sources reported.
According to reports, the forty-seven families could not be stopped from destroying the go-down lock by a salesman on duty and he had to call help from the YMA and V/C of Kawlbem village. The YMA and VC officials managed to calm the poor families down and let them each take 30 kilograms of rice from the go-down. The families are expected to pay back the state from the salaries they earn from the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
Joseph Lalrinawma, Ngopa SDO (C), who went to the site as soon as he heard the news, said that the families were on states of aggression and they only managed to calm them down after promising to give each of the families 30 kilograms of rice.
One witness told our source that Selam village has run out of rice stocks and is desperately in need of rice supplies from the state. “If the state does not give supplies soon, it is inevitable that such incident may occur again,” he said.
