Aizawl Aug 16: Reports coming from Champhai town today said a woman committed suicide after she slashed her sleeping grown up son to death at a village called Dilkawn in Champhai district, about 20 km from Champhai town.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer P.C. Lalduhtlanga today said over the telephone that a police inquest of the dead bodies placed the time of deaths between 3 and 4 am on August 15 although the bodies were discovered only in the evening.
According to the SDPO, Lalthianghlimi, a 45 year-old divorcee who is said to be highly emotional spiritually, appeared to hack her son to death while he was sleeping then later committed suicide by hanging herself by the neck.
A neighbour going to her jhum had left things on the porch of the woman’s house in which Lalthianghlimi lived with her 25 year-old son Laltanpuia, a soldier in the Assam Regiment who was currently on leave from his regiment, early on Wednesday morning and seeing the door still locked from inside and thinking that the woman was saying her morning prayers went her way to the jhum. On returning in the evening, the neighbour, a relative, was surprised to find the things she had left in the morning still on the porch.
Feeling that something was greatly amiss, she asked the assistance of a young man nearby to investigate what happened. On peeking through the bamboo woven walls of the house, they saw the woman hanging from the rafters. The duo raised a hue and cry after which the people of the village quickly contacted the Champhai police. The police told the villagers not to disturb the scene and dispatched a sub-inspector and assistant sub-inspector of police to the village immediately.
When the police arrived, they broke the door of the house down with the help of the villagers and found not one body as expected, but two bodies in the house, the son lying on his bed with a pool of blood with knife wounds on his throat arms and head in the bedroom.
According to Lalduhthlanga, the SDPO, the woman had not been very happy with her son because he had not brought home any money with him this time when he came home on a furlough. He further revealed that the woman was angry with her son because he indulged in drugs.
Making a conjecture, the police officer said the woman, who was highly emotional because of her religious fanaticism, may have hacked her son to death while he was sleeping and then hanged herself.
He further said they did not suspect third party involvement in the double tragedy. The mother and son were buried today at the Dilkawn cemetery after their bodies were examined by doctors at the Champhai Civil Hospital.

MENOPAUSE!!! I’m pretty sure MENOPAUSE (in addition to many other factors) played a role in this crime. I have read a lot of crazy stories about women doing crazy stuff during menopause. It’s crazy how slight hormone imbalance can result in horrific stuff. Same thing with Chris Benoit and testosterone!
