“If Sania can get sponsors, why can’t I?” - MC Marykom, India’s top female boxer
Despite having two World Championships under her belt and preparing for her third,MC Marykom is unable to attract sponsors. She has won back-to-back championships in 2002(Turkey) and 2005(Russia).
Why is it that, while she has reached the pinnacle of her chosen sport and yet has to survive on a Rs. 5000 grant from the Sunil Gavaskar’s Champs Foundation and her job with the Manipur Police, a player like Sania who has not won any notable tournament and whose ranking continues to slide gets all the sponsors?
