Most Mizos did not press for separation from India in 1947. Unlike Nagaland, the Church in Mizo opposed cecession and violence from the beginning. Perceived discrimination by the central government during the 1959 famine triggered militancy by the Mizo National Front (MNF), which was welcomed in East Pakistan. Pakistan’s defeat in the 1971 war with India deprived MNF of a reliable ally, but it regrouped with Chinese aid and Burmese havens. Factionalism in the MNF weaned away splinters to join the Indian “mainstream”. The MNF supremo threw in the towel on being co-opted as Chief Minister of Mizoram in 1987. Peace lasts in this state owing to the presence of “an influential political class favoring autonomy within India”. (p 101)

India atanga independence ka chak nachhan te:
1. Indian National Anthem DO NOT include us, northeastern states
2. Indian culture/dresses/food is not our culture/dress or food. This includes languages etc
3. When i can be very close to almost anyone in the northeast, even if we met for the first time…i always feel different from the mainland Indians. I never really feel like an Indian
4. Since we look so different, I am very often asked for my passport anyway. Feels like I am a foreigner.
5. While we know all the states and capitals since childhood, most mainland Indian, however educated they are…do not know anything about Mizoram. Its like we are in a forgotten land.
