Reeling under the criticism following the Dhaula Kuan gangrape case, Delhi Police Commissioner B K Gupta has decided to hold a quarterly “inter-state coordination meeting with NCR police departments for exchange of information on criminal gangs, especially professionals like the Mewat gang”.
In an exclusive interview with Newsline, Gupta said, “We are preparing a proper action plan now. We will ask Faridabad, Gurgaon and police departments of other nearby states to share information on movement of criminals to Delhi. Once a week, we will conduct massive checks on the important routes in Delhi.”
The first inter-state coordination meeting, since the Dhaula Kuan gangrape, will take place on December 15.
“There has been no such meeting in the recent past, except one before the Commonwealth Games. Now, it will be a regular affair. Since we cannot operate in other states, we need other states’ police to assist us. Specially, we require coordination from Faridabad and Gurgaon police,” Gupta said.
The Delhi Police has realised this after a strong contingent of over 360 police personnel had to go to Dhauj village in Mewat to arrest suspects in the gangrape case.
The Crime Branch is also collecting the data of criminals from Mewat involved in several cases in Delhi. Officials said gangs like these specialise in breaking shutters, stealing cows and also carrying away motorcycles in their tempos.
“They carry stones and ropes in their tempos. They don’t kill people but still carry countrymade pistols as well. In fact, they have hired a few (regular) lawyers to apply for bails in case they are arrested, as they are regular offenders. It is not easy for two to three police officers to catch them because they fire at police as well,” said an officer.
These criminals mostly belong to places like Dhauj, Punana, Nuh and a few villages on bordering areas of Alwar. “They know Delhi very well and along with its police posts. They usually enter Delhi through M G Road,” said the officer.
B K Gupta said the department is now focusing on M G Road for night patrolling along with six other routes.
The night checkposts will be put in place between 1 am to 5 am and tempos will be thoroughly checked.
