I am a true Mizo by blood but I would like to write in English as I am more comfortable. I apologize for the same.
Looking at the situation of Mizoram, my birth place and my only state in this vast world. I wonder why many of my brothers are trying to subdue the beautiful Mizo languages. We have almost succeeded in erasing the Ralte language of Mizo from the face of the earth which barely have users as many as a person’s fingers.
Besides, these Ralte speaking persons are all above seventies if I’m not mistaken. Yet, there are no steps taken to preserve the language besides being in a country where many cultures and languages are preserved by the constitution. In the next few couple of years, I hope the Ralte language will be mentioned at least in our history. And after a few decades many Mizo Raltes will never know that they even had a language once.
Speaking of the Hmars, The Hmar mizo language is on the verge of extinction in our state. If the government of Manipur and Assam had not taken steps to preserve it by introducing it as an MIL. It is would have been long gone with her sister language Ralte.
If other states can preserve our language, why can’t our own state and government do it? Are we too scared to lose our so called Mizo language or the Duhlian tawng? Why can’t we let all our languages live together in harmony? We can have Duhlian as our lingua franca and take steps to promote our other languages as well.
If we consider only one language important and neglect other languages, there are chances that many of our brothers and sisters outside the state will be lost from us forever. Further, we will never have the chance to draw our own state or national boundary as the Nagas are planning. Leave alone ‘UNIFICATION’.
If our own brothers, the Hmars wanted to call the place they occupy as their autonomous region and not even a district, why do we have to rebuke them? They are like a son who wants to have a single bed while they deserve a single room in our small home.
A good father indeed gives more than what his son asks if it will be bring peace in harmony in the home. This will also serve as a measure to protect the few Hmar speaking people. It doesn’t mean they will not use Duhlian as their Lingua Franca. However, if a son asks to stay away from home, a father indeed has the right to rebuke him if he knows his son is incapable of taking care of himself.
Have any of our political leaders, (not only Pu Lalthanhawla) ever taken a step for Unification? I think they all have the wrong side of thinking by considering their own flesh and blood as outsiders and intruders. Looking from outside, I see Mizo as a big family with large land and many resources.
A rich guy legally made part of the Mizo land to be called Mizoram for the Mizos. And now, these people in this small boundary have accused their own family outside the boundary as outsiders and intruders. Why do we continue to fight among ourselves while other neighbors like the Nagas are trying to built their own home?
What if we have a PM in our country with the attitude of our honorable CM? He will imposed all of us to use only Hindi and most of the languages including Duhlian could have been only in History(that too if we are lucky). We stand today doesn’t mean we stand tomorrow, we need to plan today to live tomorrow. New leaves will replace old leaves. I don’t think our CM wants to hated by the Hmars for what he said about them. We don’t want our CM to be hated by any of us in the present and future.
Lastly, a good son learns from his father and teaches the same to his sons.

There’s no harm in having a multi-language as provided by the Indian constitution. Comparing the Naga system as a model is an absolute desire of every Mizo and the way it should be, but the Big QUESTION is : Is it really applicable among the Mizo tribes? Going through our past histories and conflicts most of us believe its irrelevant, Manipur Govt. doesn’t have any special provision for preserving these Zo languages, it only recognize them for educational purpose (MIL), Hmar-Kuki Conflict, Kuki-Paite Conflict, Hmar-Paite cold war, with all these situations how could someone easily have the notion that this will never happen here in Mizoram, after your example is mainly based on Manipur. It can be observed that its an absolute system failure citing Manipur as an example.
To be contd… 😛

A post with some points that make senses BUT of all things as a Mizo, you should try to be comfortable in Mizo. it is our duty to spread the Mizo language not only between our tribes as it is the riches language of all the Mizo tribes. Not only between our tribes but to other races as well, we have to be made known to outsiders in all positive way possible. That is my simpul English hairehai 🙂
Definition of Mizo: Identity of Hmar, Lusei, Ralte, Thado, Lai, Laizo, Mara, Zomi etc.
I speak Ralte but not fluently and i’m in my mid 40’s ahems 😉 I speak Hmar, Lai etc too hairehai 😛
A rich guy legally made part of the Mizo land to be called Mizoram for the Mizos Who the heck is the rich guy?
Why do we continue to fight among ourselves while other neighbors like the Nagas are trying to built their own home? It’s because hehehe we’re dumb sons of bitches, too proud to see the truth or rather, too proud to admit our faults but eager to blame fault on the other.
But, Hmar or no Hmar., in regard to your subject..nobody, i say NOBODY from outside the state of Mizoram should pressure our state government and the people.
