At the NARM (National Association of Recording Merchandisers) conference earlier in the month, Chris Sacca, head of business development for Google, told music retailers and distributors, according to Reuters reports:
We are not going to be selling music…We’re already in the music business, because we’re the complement to the offline life. After people hear the name ‘Gnarls Barkley’ their next move is to go and check on Google for it.
Two weeks later, Google announced today “Google Music Trends: See what Google Talk users are listening to”:
Music status sharing – Show your friends what music you listen to and discover new music that your friends are into (or discover that they spend their entire day listening to Barry Manilow… hmm). We also thought it would be fun for you to see the musical tastes of the broader community.
So you now have the option of sharing your music listening history with Google, to be included in the rankings of our new Google Labs project called Music Trends.
What is Google up to? Only Google Trends knows!
