Update : This has gone national.
It’s been announced by the PHE dept that Tlawng Lui which supplies Aizawl with water has been poisoned and all water which had earlier been pumped into storages has been discarded. Around 5/6 pm Thursday evening, PHE workers notified the Control room about seeing dead fish and other creatures in the waters of the river, as well as in 3 other places where the dept sources water. The dept immediately swung into action by draining away all its reservoirs. 3 persons were today arrested in connection with the poisoning, suspected to be some kind of insecticide.
On a related note, the President, in his address to the nation on the eve of India’s 60th Independence Day talked about our water harvesting..
I have seen during my visit to Mizoram in the North-East, that almost every house is being equipped with self-contained water harvesting systems, which provides adequate water supply through out the year. These success stories clearly indicate that it is feasible to enhance food-grain output from the existing 200 million tonnes per annum to nearly 360 million tonnes per annum before 2020. This will also help in drastically reducing the number of people below the poverty line – a true indicator for an economically developed nation.
