Where to stay in Kolkata
1) Mizoram House Salt Lake
2) Mizoram House Ballygunge
3) Airport Dorm
4) Some economy hotels in New Market
5) ?????
6) GM’s parent’s place
Kolkata being the gateway by air to Aizawl , most of us find ourselves stopping by during our onward or return journey to/from Mizoram. If you have a connecting flight for the next day and you don’t have a place in town where you could crash for the night, the dorm at the airport is the perfect place to stay. You’re a lady and alone, don’t worry, there’s ladies dorm. 200 bucks a bed for non-AC and 250 for AC. The reason not to worry doesn’t end there, you might find a fellow Mizo guy travelling alone stopping for a night and lodging at the dorm like you. Well, last Jan someone was lucky to find me . Together we went shopping to New Market, boarded the metro upto Dum Dum followed by rickshaw ride to the airport , on a cold January evening after dark.
But luck does not happen to everyone. So don’t count on me. For example, Sandman was hanging around in the airport sometime in December last year and no lady luck for him since all he did was a trip to the airport bar to sip some fruit cocktail and Red Bull.
Guys, before I leave the airport scene, keep this in mind. The airport bar is expensive. I know that because Sandman confessed and Alexxfender mentioned it to certain someone. Unless you are returning from Aizawl, get your stuff ready beforehand, better if ready to drink. Men’s dorm has a good lobby where I had a great time reading The Google Story, sipping coke with certain liquid between chapters and pages till early morning.
FYI, you can’t stay at the airport dorm unless you have a connecting flight in like 12 hours or so. I really wish the terminal has more telephone booth. I usually use the one at the Post Office. Those of you who wants to get online, there’s iWay.
Now, early days. Mizoram House Salt Lake was my designated place to stay during the train-upto-Kol days. The last time I stayed there was March 2005. Beds and furniture in men’s dorm had gone real bad and it ain’t cool spending the night alone in the second floor men’s dorm. Salt Lake is peaceful, a bonus for Mama’s fans. Discomfort is that shops, phone booths are too far away. Atleast there’s a bar/restaurant just a little walk away.
Only once I had been to the Ballygunge house. It’s dirty but you are likely to find more people at any given time. It’s closer to the railway station and shopping places.
Any good place near the airport? My uncle once mentioned certain hotels with reasonable tariff in the vicinity of New Market. Well, there’s a surprise not for you alone but for himself ,Gm’s place. I am sure you could get a shelter there if you can’t find a place to stay like the parents of Jesus of Nazareth.
That is the little bit of places to stay I know in Kolkata. For the rich and the famous, there should be lots more choices. Now you tell me.

When I was doing my engineering course in Coimbatore, I usually spend a couple of days at Chennai and then take the night flight Chennai-Cal followed by the next day Cal-Aiz flight. Since I used to reach Cal airport around 10-11pm, I stay in the airport lobby. No need to waste your money on dorms.
Its pretty nice actually. The airport is dead quiet in the night with no arrival and departure. There will be many other people too staying there. Its like Chennai Railway station, where people waiting for their trains roll out a mat and sleep right there on the Platforms. You must fight for a place on the cushy couches, otherwise you will have only the plastic chairs.
Nevertheless, its better than going far away from teh airport when ur next flight is just a couple of hours away. And there are bound to be a group of Northeast girls who had just arrived from Delhi too and are staying there in the airport lobby. What happened next is best left up to your imagination. (Can we call this the Mile-low Club? )
I once overslept, and when I woke up, I was the only one sleeping there inside the airport and people around me were bustling with activity. That was very embarrassing indeed

actually in the building where i live in the Mizoram Synod runs a guest house..
anyone can stay there..
they have
2 double rooms (100 bucks a night Cheap!) attached bathroom
1 dormitory for guys 8 beds (30 bucks a night)
1 dorm for ladies same price
you can have mizo chaw in the Mizoram Synod Field Secretary’s house 40 bucks per meal…
the university my dad works for also runs a guest house in the same building two floors up..
this is expensive.. AC double rooms only 450 a night (which is still cheaper than most hotels) around 8 rooms plus you get breakfast @50/-
of course you can crash at my place which is in the same building but better tell me first and ill tell my mom to clean our dog kennel =)
location is on AJC Bose road.. next to Mother Teresa’s house / Pratt Memorial School/St James School/ The Income Tax Building/
its a 15 minute taxi ride from Ballygunge Mizoram House
