Aizawl Aug 3: The Animal Husbandry & Veterinary department will rush serum samples it has collected from suspected chickens in southern Mizoram to labs in Kolkata and Bhopal following outbreaks of avian flu in neighbouring Manipur and Myanmar.
The department’s Disease Investigation Officer Dr Saihlira, talking to this newspaper today said the earlier report in the media that a hundred chickens had died in Ngopa area bordering Manipur had been erroneous and that it was not Ngopa area, but Sangau area near Saiha in southern Mizoram bordering Myanmar that about a hundred chickens had died.
“The veterinary assistant surgeon in Saiha has rushed to the area and is currently on his way to the state capital with serum samples he had collected. He will proceed to Kolkata tomorrow by flight where he will leave several samples with the Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory there and then proceed to Bhopal on Sunday where he will give another batch of samples to the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory there,” Dr Saihlira said.
Asked about the situation in Ngopa area, especially Hrianghmun and outlying villages, he said communications with the team of doctors is still to be established but assured that there is nothing to worry about because the teams had been sent only as a precautionary measure.
In fact, he said the report from Hrianghmun is that only about 30 chickens had died in the area but since the area is adjacent to Manipur, it was on precautionary measures that two trams had been sent there.
Dr Saihlira, accompanied by Vety surgeon Dr R. Malsawma, had gone to Manipur on Monday to visit the bird flu affected areas and to see first hand the culling operations that were being carried out there. The two Vety officials returned to Mizoram yesterday and according to Dr Saihlira, the experience will prove very useful should avian flu outbreak occur in Mizoram.
“It was very fortunate that we were able to experience first hand culling operations in Manipur because there were a lot of difficulties administratively, financially and logistically. Should we experience an outbreak in the state, we will be able to deal with it efficiently because we are now aware of the problems that culling teams can face during operations,” he said.
