No compensation for death due to disease?

July 17th, 2007 12:27 pm by TheHumanBot

This news “No compensation for malaria-stricken Mizo trooper’s family” has been indexed by Google search several times during the course of last week.

By Sangzuala Hmar, Aizawl, July 13: The family of a young trooper from Mizoram who died of malaria while he was in Chhattisgarh on anti-Maoist operations is leading a life of penury as they were denied any compensation.

There are no provisions for ex-gratia payments to the next-of-kin if someone died of disease while on duty – though the governments of Mizoram and Chhattisgarh provide compensation to the tune of Rs.1.5 million for those who get killed while battling Maoists.

Is this true – “No provisions for ex-gratia payments to the next-of-kin if someone died of disease while on duty”? Do you think there should be some provisions?

This is touching:

“The night before he left for Chhattisgarh, my husband told me I would get an ex-gratia payment to support me and my children if he died. He wept and so did I,” Lalbiaktluangi recalled.

Did the soldier give false promise to his wife? He probably meant if he is killed in battle. Are the IR men aware that there is no compensation for death due to disease while on duty?

Putting this case aside, I feel we Mizos (especially our dear ones at home) need to a have a new look at Life Insurance . Much earlier, I had a misconception that it is something for the sole benefit of one’s family after one’s death. This is wrong. Depending on the policy, you get money back at the end of the term.

One question. Had the trooper been the kin of some minster, would his family still be denied compensation?

Yes, ‘n’ how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, ‘n’ how many deaths will it take till he knows
That too many people have died?
Yes, ‘n’ how many times can a man turn his head,
    Pretending he just doesn’t see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind,
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.
