Update:
Dear Mi(sual) and Co
Greatly appreciate your very kind thoughts but I fear you have received inaccurate information! I was elected Deputy Chair of the Paekakariki Community Board which is an extended arm of the Kapiti District Council. I am NOT a Councillor. While I am indeed the first Asian (and Mizo!) to be elected to office in Kapiti, I am by no means the first in the country.
– Helen (see the comment here)
November 23rd:
Helen Keivom, second daughter of L. Keivom, IFS (Retd.) was elected Deputy Chair to the City Council (District) elections in New Zealand on October 17, 2007. Helen Keivom is not just the first Hmar woman (Zo hnahthlak) to hold this rank but the first ever among Asian women.
The Council and their decisions have a very high profile impact at the National level. There are 4 districts in New Zealand.

Helen’s sister Mary (I think) is a famous fashion designer in London. The lovely town where Helen is Deputy Mayor is also called Kapiti (for short, I guess). Do you know that the mayor is also a lady called Jenny Rowan ?

Dear Mi(sual) and Co

While I am indeed the first Asian (and Mizo!) to be elected to office in Kapiti, I am by no means the first in the country. There are also quite a few more than 4 districts in NZ – I think confusion must have arisen from the fact that the Kapiti district has 4 wards/Community Boards. The Board’s role is to advocate for our community’s needs to the Council. It is a great honour to have been elected by my local community and for it to be received so well by you all. Many thanks!
ps
love the name of the blog!
