Apology Issued By Urban Pind Management Following Incident of Racial Discrimination
A forward email update (from Rajni George) on the Urban Pind Incident:
Dear Friends,
You are probably familiar with the details of the incident of racial discrimination that took place at the Delhi lounge bar Urban Pind on Thursday, June 19th. That night, a young media professional from Nagaland was kept from entering a Delhi lounge bar, Urban Pind, on their expat night, because she was from the Northeast.
As there is no clear law against specific discrimination, the National Scheduled Tribe Commission was approached to intervene. The Commission, as a result, summoned the proprietors of the bar and sought an explanation for their behaviour. Following this pro-active mediation, the management of Urban Pind has issued a written apology to the victim of this discrimination and has clearly stated that they do not and and will not follow such a discriminatory door policy.
This incident has highlighted the need for more transparency in the door policies of Delhi bars and night clubs, so that such cases of blatant discrimination are not repeated. There was a lot of public support for this case, the first of its kind, from the very begining. Following media reports, over 200 concerned citizens organised a protest outside the establishment on the 3rd of July. They also spearheaded an online campaign on the popular networking site Facebook, with over 1000 members in the group titled ‘Boycott Urban Pind’. The case would not have been resolved so easily had it not been for such active public campaigning.
Press: to follow up please contact Enatoli Sema, the lawyer who has been handling this case, at enatoli@gmail.com or 9818139636.
To follow up on a continued campaign to end racial discrimination in Delhi’s public establishments and for full details re this incident, please see the Facebook group ‘Delhi Against Discrimination’ (‘Boycott Urban Pind’ till today, August 12th).
