Mizoram bids goodbye to Dancing Girl, garlands Red Vanda
AIZAWL, Dec 19: Red Vanda has finally replaced the Dancing Girls as State flower in Mizoram. The Governor of Mizoram declared Red Vanda, locally referred to as Senhri, as the State flower yesterday.
Just like the Dancing Girl, which is called “Aiting” in local language, Red Vanda also belongs to the orchid family. While the scientific name of Dancing Girl has never been mentioned, Red Vanda has Renanthera Imschootiana Rolfe as its scientific name.
According to forest department, Red Vanda is an extremely rare and endangered epiphytic orchid of north-eastern India, distributed in the hill tracts of the Cachar district of Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Burma at elevations of 1,000-1,500m. It has showy yellow, red spotted petals and red-flushed lateral sepals. This species is of great horticultural value and a progenitor of many outstanding hybrids such as Aranthera Leong Kok, Rendopsis Hiiaka and Renanthopsis Jan Stokes.
It is also included in the Threatened Plant List of India published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources and the Red Data Book of Indian Plants. Indiscriminate collection and severe habitat loss are the two potent factors responsible for its depletion.
Mesual Ferrea or the Nahar tree, locally known as Herhse is the state tree of Mizoram while Serow (local name Saza) and Hume’s Bar Tailed Pheasant (locally called Vavu) retain the status of state animal and State bird respectively. “The Mizoram State symbols vividly illustrate the diverse natural heritage of the northeast Indian State. The State animal, State bird, the State flower and the State tree collectively form the State symbols. The State symbols of Mizoram are a manifestation of the State’s pride and depict the best of the State’s natural offerings,” said forest department sources. (UNI)
