SHILLONG, Aug. 25: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Vairengte circle from Kolasib district of Mizoram visited Shillong on Thursday to meet KSU central body members to inform it about problems being faced by the Khasi Jaintia community there. The Khasi Jaintia community at Mizoram is not being identified as tribals but are considered more like non-tribals there, the union’s Vairengte circle president, Paila Dkhar said.
He also said that the Khasi Jaintia community who have been there since 1935-36 and numbering around 60 households at present, have not been approved for land holding certificates and land settlement certificates (LSC). Dkhar expressed surprise that though they are not being issued LSCs, the same is allegedly being approved for the Nepali community residing there, prompting the Vairengte circle to seek the help of the KSU central body.
Dkhar also said that in 2008, the Government of Mizoram had allowed issuance of LSCs to the Khasi Jaintia community which was opposed by two NGOs of Mizoram – Young Mizo Association (YMA) and Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP). The union’s central body president, Samuel Jyrwa, while briefing the media said that the matter would be taken into consideration, adding that an immediate dialogue between the two Mizo NGOs and the KSU is required. The KSU will invite the MZP for talks in Meghalaya while it will meet the YMA in Mizoram, he said.
