Mithun Chakraborty (Bengali: মিঠà§à¦¨ চকà§à¦°à¦¬à¦°à§à¦¤à§€ Miá¹hun Chôkroborti, Hindi: मिथà¥à¤¨ चकà¥à¤°à¤µà¤°à¥à¤¤à¥€; born Gouranga Chakraborty ) is a three-time National Film Award-winning Indian film actor, social activist and entrepreneur. Mithun Chakraborty made his acting debut with the arthouse drama Mrigaya (1976), for which he won his first National Film Award for Best Actor. he had earned a huge fan following as a dancing star and went on to establish himself as one of the most popular and leading actors of India, particularly recognised for his role of street dancer Jimmy in the 1982 movie Disco Dancer.
Chakraborty has appeared in more than 300 Hindi films, as well as a number of Bengali, Oriya and Bhojpuri pictures. He owns the Monarch Group, which has interests in the hospitality sector.[1]
Early life and education
Mithun Chakraborty was born in Jorabagan, Kolkata, West Bengal to a Bengali Hindu family.
He was educated at the Scottish Church College in Kolkata, from where he earned his graduate degree in chemistry (BSc). He was initially associated with naxalities in West Bengal, which he later left and joined Mumbai films. For rest of his life, his family had continuous threat from naxalities. After that he attended and graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune.
Mithun Chakraborty was a staunch Naxalite before entering the film industry, but tragedy struck his family when his only brother got accidentally electrocuted and killed in a freak accident. He returned to his family and left the Naxalite fold, even though doing so posed a grave risk to his own life. He had also undergone expert training in Martial Arts.
[edit]Film career
Mithun Chakraborty made his film debut in the 1976 Mrinal Sen directed film Mrigaya for which he won the coveted National Film Award for Best Actor. After his debut he played some supporting roles in films such as Do Anjaane (1976) and Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan (1977) which did not gain him any recognition. He shot into prominence in the late 1970s with the low budget Ravikant Nagaich directed spy film Surakshaa (1979) and the early 1980s with leading roles in hit films such as Hum Paanch (1980) and Wardat (1981) (a sequel to Surakshaa).
His breakthrough role finally came in the musical drama Disco Dancer (1982) which was a huge success and remains a cult favorite to this day. This film and other musical films such as Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki (1984) and Dance Dance (1987) showcased him as a talented dancer.
Chakraborty starred in a number of successful romantic and family dramas during the 1980s, such as Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye (1983), Pyaar Jhukta Nahin (1985), Swarg Se Sunder (1986), and Pyaar Ka Mandir (1988). These films remain his most commercially successful films to date.[2]
He was widely recognized as an action hero in hit films like Wanted (1983), Boxer (1984), Jagir (1984), Jaal (1986), Watan Ke Rakhwale (1987), Commando (1988), Waqt ki Awaz (1988), Guru (1989), Mujrim (1989) and Dushman (1990). Chakraborty worked with some of the biggest actresses of his time and Bollywood in general, including Zeenat Aman, Padmini Kolhapure, Rati Agnihotri, Rekha, Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit.
Chakraborty achieved not only commercial success but also tremendous critical acclaim. His performances in Mrigaya, Tahader Katha, Swami Vivekananda, Kalpurush and Titli were widely appreciated and won him National Film Awards and nominations. He won two Filmfare awards: The Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his performance in the 1990 film Agneepath, and the Filmfare Best Villain Award for his performance in Jallad. He was praised for his performances in films including Pyaar Ka Mandir (1988) and Mujrim (1989).
In the mid 90s he took a break from Mumbai and relocated to Ooty where he set up his Own hotel business under The Monarch brand name. He operates hotels in Mudhumalai, Ooty in Tamil Nadu and Darjeeling and Kolkata in West Bengal. Mithun strategically shifted his focus from mainstream Hindi cinema to low-budget movies. He was considered as a One Man Industry for a decade as he starred over 80 films in ten years. He was literally running a Parallal Bollywood Industry based at Ooty, Chennai and nearby locations. These movies were mainly produced to cater the audiences of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Bengal, where Chakraborty has a cult-following even today. His economical film production was popular as Mithun’s Dream Factory.[3][4][5][6][7] He paid more tax than anyone else in the country in the mean period for 6 continuous years, from 1994 to 1999.[8]
Chakraborty made a comeback to the mainstream Hindi film industry in 2005 with the film Elaan, although it was not a success. After a few supporting roles in films such as Lucky: No Time for Love (2005), he was acclaimed for his performance in Kalpana Lazmi’s Chingari (2005). In 2007 he starred in Mani Ratnam’s hit film Guru for which he received much critical praise. Guru was the second commercially successful film after Lucky: No Time for Love since his comeback. Mithun Chakraborty had 9 releases in 2008 including Bengali and Bhojpuri films. His movie Heroes was an above average box office success, and his comic performance was praised in Don Muthu Swami. In 2009, his movie Zor Lagaa Ke…Haiya! won multiple International awards [9] and Chal Chalein was appreciated by critics for its bold theme. His Phir Kabhi with Dimple Kapadia had a very successful premiere through direct to home (DTH) in September 2009 and won as many as six awards in as many categories at the Los Angeles Reel Awards-2009. Mithunda’s last Hindi releases Veer, along with Salman Khan, though a commercial failure, won him rave reviews, but Golmaal 3 become a Blockbuster at the box-office. His delayed films like Raakh and Zindagi Tere Naam are getting ready for an early release due to Golmaal 3 ‘s Huge Success. He is also doing Spaghetti 24 x 7, along with his son Mimoh Chakraborty.
Parallel to his Bollywood career, Mithun Chakraborty had chalked up an array of successful and not-so-successful films in his native Bengali, as well as in realistic or arthouse movies, where his trained acting has resulted in him getting quite a few awards and accolades. Troyee, made in 1982 with Debashree Roy and Anil Chatterjee, was a big success. After the move to Bombay, and his popularity as a star in mainstream Hindi movies, there was a lull in Mithun’s appearances in mainstream Bengali movies, but he continued to appear in arthouse movies like eminent director Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s Tahader Katha which got him the second National Award in 1992. A third National Award followed in 1995, this time for the Best Supporting Actor , for his awesome portrayal of Ramakrishna Paramhansa, in G V Iyer’s Swami Vivekananda. He also got accolades for Goutam Ghose’s Gudia in 1999. He also appeared in Rituparno Ghosh’s critically and commercially appreciated Titli in 2002, starring with the real-life mother-daughter pair of Aparna Sen and Konkona Sen Sharma. Recently, the Fatakeshto series of popular entertainers have been widely successful in West Bengal. In 2008, he collaborated again with Dasgupta for the critically acclaimed Kaalpurush, with Rahul Bose and Sameera Reddy. Mithun’s recent release Shukno Lanka, won critical acclaim and commercial success simultaneously.
[edit]Sports
Mithun Chakraborty has also been involved in promotion of Football in his native Bengal. The Bengal Football Academy is his brainchild and Mithun raised the necessary funds for the launch of this academy.
Mithun Chakraborty was also the co-owner of Royal Bengal Tigers, a cricket team of the Indian Cricket League.[10]
[edit]Personal life
Mithun Chakraborty is married to former Indian actress Yogeeta Bali and has four children, three sons and a daughter The eldest son, Mimoh Chakraborty is an actor in Bollywood, who made his debut in the 2008 film Jimmy, His second son, Rimoh Chakraborty played Mithun’s younger version the film Phir Kabhi. And Mithun’s other two children Namashi Chakraborty and Dishani Chakraborty are still into their studies.
Numerous sources claim that Mithun Chakraborty had a relationship with actress Sridevi from 1986 to 1987, and that Sridevi ended the relationship when she found out that he had not divorced his first wife, Yogeeta Bali. Mithun Chakraborty and Sridevi were believed to have been secretly married and that the union was later annulled.[11]

Mohanlal Vishwanathan Nair (born 21 May 1960),[2] known mononymously as Mohanlal (Malayalam: മോഹനàµâ€à´²à´¾à´²àµâ€) is an Indian film actor and producer who works mainly in Malayalam cinema. He has won four National Awards – two Best Actor Awards, one Special Jury Award, and one Award for Best Film (as producer). He has also won six Best Actor Kerala state awards, the most times the award has been given to any actor. In 2001, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his contributions to Indian cinema. In 2009, he was granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel by the Territorial Army,[3] which was the first instance in the history of Indian cinema of an actor being conferred an honorary Army rank. In 2010, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit awarded him an honorary doctorate.[4]
Early life (1960-1977)
Mohanlal was born in Elanthoor Pathanamthitta in Kerala, to Vishwanathan Nair, a lawyer and subsequently law secretary for the Government of Kerala, and Shanthakumari, a housewife. Lal and his brother were brought up in Trivandrum, in his mother’s house, as his father was working in the government secretariat. He attended the Mudavanmukal LP school and later enrolled in the Model School, Thiruvananthapuram.[5] In the sixth grade, he was chosen as the best actor in his school, an award that was usually given to tenth graders.[5]
Mohanlal attended Mahatma Gandhi College in Thiruvananthapuram for his bachelor’s degree. He continued his association with acting and won numerous best actor awards. At college, he met a group of students who were passionate about theatre and feature films; this group was instrumental in providing him with his first breakthrough.[6] Some of the members of the group, including Priyadarshan, M.G.Sreekumar and Maniyanpilla Raju, went on to become popular movie directors, actors, or singers.
[edit]Film career
Main article: Mohanlal filmography
[edit]Early years (1978-1985)
Mohanlal’s first film was Thiranottam (1978). The film was only released in one theater because of censorship difficulties. His breakthrough came in 1980, when he was selected by Navodaya Appachen for the role of the antagonist in Manjil Virinja Pookkal, which became a major hit. In 1983, Mohanlal was credited in more than 25 feature films. In 1984, he expanded into comic roles with Priyadarshan’s directorial debut, Poochakkoru Mookkuthi.
[edit]Golden period (1986-1995)
The period of 1986–1995 is widely regarded as the golden age of Malayalam cinema, with films characterised by detailed screenplays, lucid narration and fresh ideas narrowing the gap between art and commercial films.[7] In 1986, Mohanlal worked with Sathyan Anthikad, winning his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his work in T. P. Balagopalan M.A. He portrayed an underworld don in the blockbuster film Rajavinte Makan. Mohanlal’s popularity among teenage moviegoers was increased by his roles in Priyadarshan’s musical comedies, notably Chithram and Kilukkam. Thoovanathumbikal, in which he portrayed a person torn between his twin love interests, broke many stereotypes in Indian films, such as the leading man falling in love with a second woman immediately after he is rejected by the first.
Mohanlal portrayed a real-life character in Devaasuram (1993), directed by I. V. Sasi and written by Ranjith. The film went on to become a cult classic.
Mohanlal’s work with writer Lohitha Das and director Sibi Malayil is considered to have produced some of his most haunting roles. His role of Sethu Madhavan, who dreams of becoming a police officer but ends up as a criminal in the film Kireedam, earned him a Special Jury award. His role in Bharatham, as a classical singer who is burdened by the jealousy brother, earned him the Best Actor National Award the following year.
In the 1990s, Mohanlal acted in a number of notable commercial movies, such as His Highness Abdullah, Midhunam, and Minnaram. Devaasuram, written by Ranjith and directed by I. V. Sasi, was one of Mohanlal’s most successful films.
[edit]Later years (1996-present)
Many movies made in this period built on Mohanlal’s image as an invincible, larger-than-life hero. Notable examples include Aaram Thamburan, Narasimham, Ravanaprabhu and Naran. Some of these films faced criticism for their lack of realism and emphasis on Mohanlal. Priyadarshan’s Kala Pani and Lohithadas’s Kanmadam were among his other notable films during the late 1990s.
Mohanlal’s first non-Malayalam movie was the Tamil film Iruvar, directed by Mani Ratnam. He won his second National Award for Best Actor for the Indo-French movie Vaanaprastham. The film was also selected for the competitive section at the Cannes Film Festival.[1]
In 2000, Mohanlal starred in Narasimham, which became one of the highest grossing movies in the history of Malayalam cinema. In 2002, Mohanlal acted in his first Bollywood movie, Company, which introduced him to the Hindi-speaking audience in India and for which he won the IIFA Star Screen Award for Best Supporting Actor.[citation needed] In 2005, he appeared in Rasathanthram, directed by Sathyan Anthikkad, and won the Kerala State Award for his performance in the film Thanmathra (“Molecule”). In 2007, Mohanlal won the 2007 Kerala State Award for Best Actor for his performance in the movie Paradesi. The same year, he appeared in his second Bollywood movie, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag, and in Hallo, which became the biggest Malayalam hit of 2007.[8]
In 2009, Mohanlal appeared with Kamal Haasan in the Tamil movie Unnaipol Oruvan. His first film in 2010 was Evidam Swargamanu, directed by Roshan Andrews. The same year, he also appeared in Janakan, Alexander the Great, Shikkar, and Kandahar. He recently acted alongside Suresh Gopi, Dileep and Sarath Kumar in Christian Brothers, a Malayalam film to be released on March 10, 2011.

[edit] Early career, 1971–1980Mammootty’s first screen appearance was an uncredited appearance in the 1971 film Anubhavangal Paalichakal, directed by K. S. Sethumadhavan.[9] He was a student at the Maharajas College then. In 1973, he got another role in Kalachakram, a Prem Nazir movie directed by K. Narayanan. He acted under the screenname Sajin, but later dropped it.[citation needed]
His professional film career began in 1979, when he played his first lead role in Devalokam,[2] directed by veteran M. T. Vasudevan Nair. However, this film was never released.
[edit] 1980sVilkanundu Swapnangal, written by M. T. Vasudevan Nair and directed by M. Azad, was Mammootty’s first released film.[10] His roles in Mela, directed by K. G. George, in which he played a circus artist, and Thrishna, directed by I.V. Sasi, got him noticed as a hero.[3][4]
In 1982, his role of a police officer in the investigative thriller Yavanika (1982) directed by K. G. George was the beginning of a trend whereby Mammootty would play the role of a tough cop in many action and investigative thrillers in the coming years.[11]
In 1981, he got his first state award in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance in Ahimsa.[12]
In the mid 1980’s he appeared in Padmarajan’s Koodevide and Joshy’s Aa Raathri. His performances in films like Aalkootathil Thaniye and Adiyozhukkukal, scripted by M.T.Vasudevan Nair established him as an actor of substance.[13]
In a period of five years from 1982 to 1986 Mammootty acted in more than 150 films as a hero.[10]
His role as Karunan in Adiyozhukkukal, directed by I. V. Sasi and written by M. T. Vasudevan Nair, earned him a State Award and a Filmfare Award in the Best Actor category. Mammootty won the State special jury award and Best Actor Filmfare Award for Yathra directed by Balu Mahendra, in which he played the role of a forest officer. Other movies of the 80s included Nirakkoottu (1985), New Delhi (1987) and Thaniyavarthanam (1987).
[edit] Late 1980s and 1990sIn 1988 Mammootty appeared in Oru CBI Diary Kurippu which was followed by three more murder mystery sequels produced with the same cast of characters: Jagratha (1989), Sethurama Iyer CBI (2004) and Nerariyan C.B.I (2005). The films were all directed by K Madhu, penned by S. N. Swamy with Mammootty as Sethurama Iyer. Three of M. T. Vasudevan Nair’s films were acted in by Mammootty: Aksharangal (directed by I. V. Sasi), Sukrutham (directed by Harikumar), and Keralavarma Pazhassiraja (directed by Hariharan).
Mammootty appeared in the film Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, directed by T. Hariharan and penned by M. T. Vasudevan Nair. His depiction of a Chekavar (mercenary warrior) of distinguished valor but vilified by circumstances won him the National Film Award for Best Actor. Mammootty’s performance in Mathilukal directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan was also considered for the award. His role as a hunter Varunni in Mrugaya, directed by I. V. Sasi, and another film Mahayanam, were also considered for the state award. Mammootty won the Filmfare Award for his performance in Amaram, directed by Bharathan.[14]
Mammootty received his second national award for his performances in Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Vidheyan and TV Chandran’s Ponthan Mada. He also received state award for his roles in both films. His performance in Valtsalyam directed by Cochin Haneefa was also considered for the State award.[14]
In 1999, Mammootty won his third national award for Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar, an English language movie about the life of Ambedkar, directed by Jabbar Patel.[15] The film was sponsored by the National Film Development Corporation of India and the Ministry of Social Justice.
[edit] Current era, 2000–presentIn the early 2000s, Mammootty acted in films such as Siddique’s Chronic Bachelor, K Madhu’s Sethurama Iyer CBI and Blessy’s Kazhcha. In 2004, he won the state award for his portrayal of Operator Madhavan in Kazhcha. The year 2005 proved to be immensely successful for him with two major box office hits in Thommanum Makkalum and Rajamanikyam, the latter directed by debutant Anwar Rasheed; Rajamanikyam went on to become the biggest hit of Malayalam cinema at that time.[16]
Other movies in the mid-2000s include Johny Antony’s Thuruppu Gulan (2006), Shafi’s Mayavi (2007), Amal Neerad’s Big B (2007), Anwar Rasheed’s Annan Thambi (2008) and Jayaraj’s Loudspeaker (2009).
In October 2009, Pazhassi Raja, directed by T Hariharan and written by M. T. Vasudevan Nair, was released. It was touted as the highest grossing film in the history of Malayalam cinema.[17]
In 2009, he won his fifth state award for Best Actor for his performance in Paleri Manikyam.
Mammootty was nominated for the National Award for Best Actor in 2009, but he lost the award in the final round of the competition to Amitabh Bachan. The jury’s decision to give the award to Bachan was criticised by Shaji N Karun, director of Kutty Srank (the movie which won the award for best film of 2009) and Ranjith, director of Paleri Manikyam.[18]
Pranchiyettan and the Saint, directed by Ranjith, performed well at the box office.[19]
[edit] Films in other languagesMammootty has acted in a few non-Malayalam movies and these include some Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and English films. In 1989, he made his Tamil debut in Maunam Sammatham, directed by K. Madhu. He has acted in Tamil films for directors including K. Balachander (Azhagan), Mani Ratnam (Thalapathy), and Rajiv Menon (Kandukondain Kandukondain). Kilippechu Kekkavaa (1993), directed by Fazil, had Mammootty as a romantic hero. He played the role of Anantha Sharma in K. Vishwanath’s Telugu film Swathi Kiranam (1992).
He acted in the Kannada film Love in 2005.
He made his debut into Hindi films through Thriyathri which was released in 1989, though his first film as a hero was Dhartiputra. He starred in the biographical film Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar directed by Jabbar Patel which was in the English language. He also appeared in Sau Jhooth Ek Sach (2004).
During the 2006 IIFA Awards ceremony held at Dubai, he openly criticized the organizers of the IIFA Awards for completely ignoring South Indian film by stating that the Bollywood film industry should stand up to competition from the South Indian film industry before calling itself international.[20]
[edit] Humanitarian worksMammootty is involved in more than half a dozen philanthropic projects aimed at helping needy people.[21]
[edit] Pain and Palliative CentreMammootty is the patron of the Pain and Palliative Care Society,[22] a charitable organization in Kerala formed with the aim of improving the quality of life among patients with advanced cancer. He has been the fuel and the engine of the Pain and Palliative Care Centre situated in Kozhikode, India.[23] Mammootty has now put forth a novel project to provide the pain and palliative care to those suffering from cancer throughout Kerala.[24]
[edit] Jeevan JothiMammootty is the ambassador of Jeevan Jothi, a social work project aimed at providing aid to people seeking treatment for any ophthalmic diseases, cardiac diseases, orthopedic diseases, liver diseases, renal dysfunctions, Haemophilia diseases, or ENT disorders.[citation needed]
[edit] Street India MovementMammootty is the goodwill ambassador of a charity project “Street India Movement”, which is aimed at the eradication of child begging and child labor. He has promoted the activities of the movement, which networks with orphanages and institutions looking after the children.[25]
[edit] Kazhcha- free eye care and treatmentKazhcha is a venture to extend free eye care and treatment organized by Mammootty Fans Welfare Association and Mammootty Times, in association with Little Flower Hospital and Research Centre and the Eye Bank Association of Kerala. One of the major activities related to this is distribution of free spectacles to children. A special fund received from the office of the President of India will be utilized for this purpose. Free eye camps will also be conducted at various places in connection to this project.[26]
[edit] Donating food and goodsDuring Onam 2007, Mammootty donated food items among thousand families in Parathodu near Kanjirappally in Kottayam district, a Kerala village which was hit by Chikungunya. The village which was worst hit by the disease claimed the most lives in the state.[27] In a press conference Mammootty explained his motives for doing this:
“ I decided to do this because the village has lost the maximum number of people to chikunguniya in the state this year. And this is not a publicity event and I would not be going there to distribute it either. This is done to see that others also come to extend a helping hand to those who are suffering. â€
[edit] Akshaya: information technology disseminationAkshaya, the information technology dissemination project of the Government of Kerala, has Mammootty as its Goodwill Ambassador.[28][29] He formally took over the role on 26 February 2006 at a video networked programme which was linked to all the district headquarters of the state.[8] Mammootty spearheaded the campaign by appearing in print and visual media advertisements and other publicity materials that sent the message of the Akshaya project to the grassroots. He explained:
“ I am really happy to be associated with this unique project that promises to ring in wholesome change to the perceptions about Kerala as it seeks to make its presence felt in the digital era… If we manage to reach the benefits of information technology to the entire population, we would be able to raise ourselves to the levels of a developed society. I understand that the Akshaya project has been launched with this objective. I am sure this unique project will go to make the State a fully empowered knowledge society.[30] â€
