The Karnataka government on Thursday appointed 1977 batch IPS officer Lalrokhuma Pachau as the director-general and inspector-general of police (DG&IGP) for the state.
Pachau has become the first IPS officer who got the chance to serve as DG & IGP of two states, as he was the head of Mizoram police before being appointed to the same position in Karnataka.
Pachau took over as the head of the Karnataka police as a concurrent charge. The government had appointed him as regular DGP for the criminal investigation department (CID) and later gave him the additional charge of DG &IGP. The government may give Pachau the regular DG&IGP post after receiving orders from UPSC soon.
Outgoing DG &IGP AR Infant handed over the charge to Pachau by handing over the baton at his office. Pachau, the 38th DG &IGP of Karnataka, will retire from service in March 2015.
Pachau, soon after taking, said that he would continue the good practices of his predecessor. “I just came from my native state Mizoram after serving as DG &IGP for four and half years. I will study the Karnataka police and take necessary steps to strengthen the state police force. I will give importance to maintaining law and order, crime prevention and detention, and traffic in Bangalore city,” he said. He added that he would take the necessary steps to reduce the Naxalism problem in the state, and strengthen the state intelligence wing too.
While relinquishing charge, Infant thanked the state police for their cooperation during his tenure under various positions in the police department.
Two promoted
The state government promoted additional director-general of police Om Prakash to the rank of DGP. He is posted as DGP and commandant-general for home guards and the fire and emergency services department. ADGP MN Reddy, present managing director of the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation (KSPHC), has been promoted as DGP and chairman of KSPHC.
Pachau’s Bio-data
Pachau was born in Mizoram on March 1, 1955. He completed his BA and later joined the IPS in 1977. His posting was as the ASP of Madhugiri in Tumkur district in 1980. Then he was transferred to Gulbarga sub-division as ASP in 1981. He was promoted as superintendent of police and posted in Karwar. He served CRE Cell, Lokayukata as SP. He was sent to Mizoram on deputation in 2007 as DGP.
