Do you have The Bible with you?

October 11th, 2006 6:19 am by TheHumanBot

The Bible is not a book but a collection of books. This I learned from a person who probably was not a Christian. I learned it from one of the teachers of Hindi School, Venglui when I went for 11th std admission interview. Other than this, I haven’t learned much about The Bible till date.

Most of us who frequent this site are probably not at home, living alone, with friends or with BigSIS! And many here would have been in hostel too. I wonder if you keep The Bible with you, now and before when you are away from home. What I have with me is New Testament with Psalms which I hardly open . Recently I realised, all these years since I left home, I never made any effort to keep one with me, be it English or Mizo version. I did keep “Good News Bible” when I was in hostel during 10th std. I enjoyed reading Proverbs. Besides Proverbs, I read Genesis thru Exodus. That much I have read besides random verses.

I saw in my dream the second coming of God twice many years ago. The first time, I was among the chosen ones. Second time, I was given a chance and I saw myself reading the Bible with much effort.

With this self-questioning of why I don’t have the Mizo Bible or the full English Bible with me, I went to think of this. Someone might carry and keep The Bible as a tradition or because of our parents. I am not here to critize this nor am I here to justify myself keeping only The New Testament. I just wanted to say I went on to think that this certainly is not enough.

If you keep or do not keep The Bible with you, may you share why and why not. Sometimes, we human tend to make up. Let us think before we speak.

Thanks to The Internet, today we have biblegateway.com using which we can easily search for any verse with little effort. We have the Mizo version also searchable at youthim.net . And thanks to Google and other search engine, any verse is just a click a way. However, I am not saying these are replacement for the printed one and lets not get into discussion of the media does not matter as long as it’s the words of God.

Dosn’t mean that I don’t like the Bible. Always had it before. Will get one again when I have the intention of reading it regularly.

Don’t worry! You’ll soon replace Sandman once I have enough info on you. That doesn’t mean I have a crush on Sandman or any other man.

Are you jealous? I know you miss me after I left Bangalore, but I didn’t expect you to show so much envy, especially online infront of other people.

Well, to be honest, I haven’t opened the pages of The Holy Bible in a very long time except during Church and occasional Prayer Meetings. When I was small, I have read more or less the entire Old Testament because I was really interested in those stories. Now apart from all that, the only time I read the Bible is before a tough exam/interview.

But I still read “Our Daily Bread” everyday as soon as I wake up. Like, today’s excerpt is about “Counterfeit Reality”. Using computers, it is possible to manipulate images and videos. Centuries before such modern technology, Apostle Paul had warned Timothy about counterfeit reality in the Church. He said that in the last days, people would be self-absorbed, “having a form of godliness but denying its Power” (2 Timothy 3:5).

The last paragraph of today’s reading is really deep: “When people hear us say we are Christians, they may wonder if our Faith is real. Our lives will answer the question by reflecting the reality of Christ.”

I am quite satisfied with “Our Daily Bread”, although I don’t mean to say it had completed substituted The Bible. “Our Daily Bread” also suggests a passage from The Bible to be read everyday, which I sometimes don’t follow because the crux of the Passage from the Bible has already been delivered in the “Our Daily Bread” article.

keeping bible is good, but reading bible is the most important things..other wise just keeping a bible without reading it would be like keeping a very healthy food on the table without eating it to nourish the body…

Thanks. Mahruai, I think it should come from the heart – the desire to read. Not because some tells us so, somebody does it, becuase we are Christian by birth.

Yes, that is what we mostly do. Ask God to help us achive our gaols and ambitions. Not how he would want to use us but use him to do what we want. Let’s not discuss this right now. I will come to this with a different post.

Yep, I have the NIV Bible with me wherever I go. I’ve been using this version since the very first time I started using English Bible.

I have now formed the habit of reading 1 chapter (almost) every night after which I’ll read a devotional book (Everyday with Jesus), update my diary, pray then off to dreamland.

*It’s difficult though to keep up with this habit while travelling.

*There are also nights when I force myself to read it. At least, just for the sake of reading it. I’ll then find my eyes on the Bible, but my mind drifting away elsewhere :)

*I don’t always understand the meaning. Though there are times when I read the verse I’ve known since childhood, suddenly revealing a new meaning to me. Sadly, this does not happen often!

*I don’t actually ‘enjoy’ reading the Bible as there are many more interesting things to do/read that better suit my taste, time and interest.

But I also believe that just as we need food for our daily sustenance, we also need to read the Bible daily (at least a verse) to sustain us for our spiritual nourishment.

Pray that I can regularly follow this!! For “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak”.
