A cold December night in Mizoram.. your cousins have come over for the weekend… all of you curl up under white ‘rizais’ once the clock strikes 9 pm… the TV has been switched off; the lights are out.. all is quiet and you can only hear foxes howling in the nearby hills and the neighbour’s dog barking non stop at shadowy figures.. .. Maybe there is a wind blowing hard against the window panes and you start hearing strange noises; . Some of your younger cousins start imagining things like possible ghosts trying to get into the ventilation… and you being the older cousin bravely say that there are no such things as ghosts (while in your heart you firmly believe that there is a man with no face standing right outside the window waiting to whisk you away into the blank darkness of the cold night)
Since none of you are feeling sleepy (or too scared to fall asleep) you then start telling stories to each other and soon the topic of the stories quickly gravitates towards ‘thlahrangs’ and ‘ramhuais’ and their ilk…
Some of you talk about the ghost of some little girl who when she was alive had a favourite picture and after she died that picture would always fall off the wall.. or maybe that old neighbour of yours who you heard someone say was always seen at the dinner table waiting for food to be served years after he had passed away.. or even that beautiful nula who seemed to appear out of nowhere on the Aizawl Silchar road asking for a lift and you later find out that this nula had died in some accident at that very spot some years ago… or that baby who was always heard crying in that empty house late at night…
You can now see that your youngest cousin is now absolutely terrified and is going to burst into tears and run into you parents’ bedroom any second and you reach out to comfort him and tell him that there are no ghosts… but then do you really believe that there are no ghosts?
I myself had heard many of my friends say that there are ghosts in this world and undead souls still come back to haunt us… now I believe myself to be the rational type of guy and I do not believe in any supernatural stuff… and my mom always said that ‘Pathian thu I awih chuan ramhuai leh thlahrang in an tibuai loving che’ ; now my Mom being clever never actually said there are no ghosts or ramhuais but still managed to convince me that there are no ghosts.
I always get to hear about second hand ghosts or third hand ghosts…. A friend’s cousin’s uncle’s brother was always the lucky (or unlucky) one to see a ghost or something… anyway Mizo culture and also many other cultures always seem to reserve some affection for ghosts and the supernatural..
Of course when I was in school I did believe in ‘lasis’cause the were supposed to be ‘hot’ and every other day after school got over we used to go to the hills behind Mary Mount school hunting for sexy lasis (never found any..)
I wanted to know if any you have personally seen or heard of ghosts and if so if you could share your supernatural experiences with us
(note: this is meant to be a fun topic so if you have any comments such as “in van han ho tak.. thlahrang a awm tak tak in ring a maw…” or “thlahrang te chu Sap ho hmuh chhuah ” etc etc.. then you can keep them to yourself)
