Can anyone suggest a good anti virus and firewall? Should be very low on resource . Been trying a few and can’t seem to decide, some hog all the resources while I can’t configure some of the them.

For me Symantec AntiVirus Corp. Edition is da best Anti-Virus…. lowest resource… and cannot expire. i’ve been using it more than 4 years, no complain… and i’ve tested several anti-viruses, but still SAV is da best…

There are a lot a free stuffs and most of them updates it self regularly, they will protect you form getting infected but do very little to remove virus if you have already been infected. I do feel that the Symantec Anti VirusCorp edition is the best pirated one you can have if you can still find it(but i cant remember if it had firewall which you do not actually need with a dial-up connection). most of us deleted Symantec Anti VirusCorp edition thinking that the new one were a lot better. (sucks!!)
The new ones have a lot more features but all the mizo ever really use is the antivirus stuff…
If you live outside Mizoram and have broad band connection i suggest you actually get one that you actually pay for…
or like me just back up all your data regularly on dvd or external drives(ipods) and format reinstall windows when ever some thing gets messed up. easy…

I guess no one here has ever used NOD32.
I found NOD32 when I used to run our cafe out in Tuikual South … Some of our PCs were Pentium 100Mhz with 32 MB RAM so they just wouldn’t take heavyweights like McAfee and Norton or Symantec AV. NOD32 is lite, and is the only AV which would run without slowing up all the machines.
Firewall… You really don’t need much. Windows XP’s Firewall is quite sufficient and also provides boot time protection. Its also the easiest to configure. I’ve used NOD32 with my XP firewall for the last four years without a single infection till date. And I hit practically all the warez sites. Other like Symantec’s Internet Suite and ZoneAlarm are just overkill.
They key to leveraging any antivirus protection properly is keeping your virus definitions up to date. NOD32 updates everyday which prevents long updates if you buy it, but downloads the definitions all over (6MB) if you’re trying it out. On trial, you can only use it for 30 days, before you need to uninstall and reinstall.
P.S. NOD32 is the lowest on resources you can get with a Realtime File System Monitoring antivirus. If you’re really low on resources, you can use McAfee or Norton for the command line scanner to use after downloads configurable in your download manager, and disable the file system monitor.
The correct way of using XP so that you’re well guarded is to implement the LPUA concept. It’s quite simple actually. Use your Administrator account for all the complicated stuff like installing hardware/software. Create a normal user account and use it for simple things like surfing the net, listening to music etc. Note that the first account that you create after installing Windows XP becomes a power user account, which isn’t as safe as a normal user account. The idea is that with lesser privileges, the LPUA, even if it gets infected, the infection will be contained within the account and can then be deleted by the Administrator.

SAV is my second choice. It was what I used to use before NOD32. You can update offline, which is useful in Aizawl. You can simply download Intelligent Updates™ and update later. NOD32 doesn’t allow offline updates, but is a better choice if you do get online most of the time anyway. The trial downloads a 6MB definition update everytime you get online, but registration whittles that download down to a few Kb. I’m on broadband right now, so I’m not complaining much. I reinstall after the 30 day trial. It is way lighter than SAV.

um … Check whether the cracked NOD32 updates properly. The last time I tried using a cracked version of NOD32, it wouldn’t update. I paid for NOD32 for about a year before deciding I could do with the trial and the 30 day reinstalls. But then, watever suits you…

hmm “till today” .. well Nod32 sure is the best regarding cpu and ram usage (imho), and as for a REALLY LOW RESOURCE Firewall I’d recommend Ghost Firewall (It’s free too)… if ya think Ghost is too “tiny” you might wanna try jerico or sygate (sygate is free too, but they don’t produce it nomore.. check sygate.de to dowload the last version..)… and yeah.. you have to pay for Nod32 …but it is worth it! if not try antivir from avira (www.avira.com) it is free and runs pretty smooth.

Nothing beats Avast Antivirus. Its free for personal use and its really low on system resources. I also use Ad-Aware SE which is also free and Zone Alarm which is again free. Im a free man lol

I had AVG, but turned to Avast as its not gonna be free anymore.. Symantec Internet Security and their subscription expiration got me mad..same goes for mcafee.. Avast dont eat up much memory..anyway am using 1 Gig Ram.. If I can afford my ideal choice would be Kasperky Internet Security suite.. based on the reviews from cnet.download.com.. and even our Indian Chip magazine thats smashed down other heavyweight like Mcafee or Norton..
About the Firewall, I use Zone Alarm the free Edition as my XP Firewall let more programs than I wanted to intrude my PC.
How many viruses you got on ur PC depends on how many programs u downloaded and installed on ur machine… and what sites u visit.. Keep those Antivirus-Anti spywares always running in real time and keep em up to date.. Cracking a software is khewl but in return remember u got spywares or tojan in return ..So pirated Antivirus or Internet Security Suite is not always a better idea.
