Edge with GPRS

January 25th, 2007 4:56 pm by BlackWhite

Going mobile means not having to connect your laptop to a broadband land line connection. So, I’ve decided to make that move. Data cards are not what I’m thinking of and instead, I have thought of going for a mobile with Edge technology-a technology, I am told, that increases your GPRS speed upto 3 times. What this means is that, all I need to do is plug-in my mobile (with inbuilt EDGE technology) to my laptop and voila, I’m online at download speeds > 128kbps! (this also means that my site can be opened :D).

Just wondering if any of you folks have used GPRS with Edge (or friends that you know)? I need your opinions on this, seriously.
Many thanks in advance : )

Even in Mz, people talk so much about GPRS. I went to BSNL office yesterday and the reluctant lady asked me to come again on Monday. I hope the facility is also available here.
I’m dreaming for that. Cos six days a week in Thingtlang makes me sick.

    Better late than never!

EDGE = Enhanced Data GSM Environment. EDGE is simply a faster version of GSM wireless service.
An EDGE device (Phone) supports much higher data transfer speeds.
The standard is based on the GSM standard and uses TDMA multiplexing technology.

    Source: Webopedia

I’ve been using AirTel Mobile Office (GPRS 43 Kbps Max as per
Airtel specification, Bangalore) since 2004. I’m still using it now with an EDGE phone tho

    it’s slower here in Aizawl.

What one should know is that even tho an EDGE phone has the capacity for high speed data transfer,

the internet (GPRS) speed is wholly dependent on the service provider and here we have only the usual GSM network.

The BSNL GPRS is quite pathetic, I tried using it for a week and had it disconnected.

Btw, in your PC the internet “Speed” in the status is merely the ‘baud (data transmission rate (bits/second)

for modems) rate of your COM port’,it may be modified to allow higher speeds (if available).

Right now mine says 460.8 Kbps (I wish!!) altho my connection speed wd actually vary from 10-30 kbps!
